In this deeply moving episode of Less Than One Percent podcast, Imamu Tomlinson, MD, sits down with KD Hill, a former Ole Miss football player whose life was forever changed in the aftermath of a car accident that resulted in an amputated leg just days before the NFL training camp.
Trapped, broken, and facing unimaginable trauma, KD could have given up. Instead, he chose faith. He chose resilience. He chose to keep going.
KD shares his journey of overcoming adversity and redefining what it means to live an athlete's life when the game ends unexpectedly. From surviving a life-altering event to embracing small beginnings, KD reflects on what it truly means to leave a legacy guided by and trusting the call of God.
This is how KD Hill disrupted the narrative around success, faith, and the uphill climb.
1:03
Welcome everybody to the less than 1% podcast. I am I you know I'm emotional
1:09
today because I gotta say that I was stalking you. I think I was stalking
1:14
you. Um but I gotta say I'm not I'm not going to share a lot of his story cuz we're going to talk
1:21
and you're going to get his story. A lot of you once I tell you who it is, you may already know his story. His name is
1:27
KD Hill. Um and this young man is an inspiration for lots of different
1:32
reasons. um inspired even a old cat like me uh which is hard to do but you know
1:38
welcome to less than 1%. you know, we talked to, you know, earlier when you were when you when you were coming in that this podcast is dedicated to people
1:47
who are what I call less than 1 percenters. Um, people who are underestimated,
1:53
you know, uh, you know, are able to do things that they or others especially
1:58
didn't think they could do. But then also people who, you know, for whatever reason have had things happen, life
2:05
happens and their reaction to something bad or something different that happens
2:10
to them is different than anybody else. And you know, I write about that. And uh so for me, your story is inspirational.
2:17
So I want to talk to you. Thank you for coming. You know, and um and so I want to find
2:24
out I want to go deep though. Now, I want to go into KD Hill all the way in.
2:30
So, so, uh, thank you for coming. Thank you for the opportunity, Dr. Tomlinson. Um, when you when you say less
2:36
than 1%, I think it takes a special individual to be in that percentage. Um,
2:41
those individuals when they stand in the face of opposition, not only do they
2:46
know who they are, they know who stand behind them in the face of opposition. Wow.
2:52
Right. He's not worried about your stature. He's focused on your pasta. Yeah.
2:57
If he was focused on our stature, Goliath would have defeated David. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
3:03
So, I I joked with you outside. I'm I'm an old athlete, more former than athlete, but I you know, and that's an
3:10
identity, right? Like I mean, you know, I mean, both my kids, everybody in my family is an athlete. That gives you a
3:16
sense, a different sense of living in the world. Now, you were a highlevel
3:21
athlete, right? Tell us about that mindset and that mentality like when you consider
3:27
yourself and I know you do in other ways now but at that time what's your mindset
3:33
as far as being an athlete? Well, when I was an athlete I used that that platform as an opportunity to give back to the
3:40
youth because I was once in those youth shoes and when I was in that shoe I dreamed to
3:47
be in that position that I was in. And so I think it's big on allowing those
3:53
individuals, the youth to know that they can do the things that you've done, but even do it at a greater um potential. As
4:00
I was Did you know you were I mean, did you know you were good? I mean, come on now. Like you you you in the huddle or you in
4:07
the locker room, you you know that you're good. Absolutely. Um I think it came with confidence. Yeah. I think confidence is
4:14
different from arrogance. Arrogance is thinking the world owe you something. Confidence is knowing who you are. And I
4:19
had a lot of confidence in my in my god-given abilities. Yeah. Yeah. So, you went you went to
4:25
Miss, you played at Miss Your son is at Ole Miss, Jordan. So, don't be and we
4:30
going crazy over here. All right. That some of us went to like little schools like St. Lawrence University.
4:35
So, I know this Ole Miss thing, but um that's a culture there. That that is
4:42
that is a that's a vibe, right? As far as an athlete, did do you miss that? Do you miss that relationship with the
4:49
community, with your teammates? Absolutely. Um I still stay in contact with my teammates to this day. We're in
4:55
a group chat, but also on through my foundation, the KD Hill Foundation. I do the Chucky Mullins Thanksgiving
5:01
Dinner every year. Yeah. And so we feed about 300 to 350 underprivileged families through my
5:07
foundation. Um I've been doing it ever since my time at Ole Miss. So that's my way of giving back to the community
5:13
faithfully. I don't believe in just sewing a seed, but also coming back and sewing the seed once you've planted the
5:19
seed. Water the seed because that's the only way for the seed to grow. Listen, how old are you, man? 25.
5:25
How do you How I mean, your age and your words don't match.
5:33
I mean, I'm I'm getting schooled. I'm getting schooled by a young man. That
5:38
where does that come from? You You seem like a old soul, man. And you seem like Oh, my mom, my my mom, my my
5:45
grandfather, my my grandparents, my family, but most importantly, I think it's a wisdom that come from up above.
5:51
Yeah. Right. Life experiences. Um, just the things I've experienced as a young man taught me how to be a man at
5:58
a young age. Yeah. I was the only child on my mom's side. It was just me and my mom. My grandfather passed away from pancreatic
6:03
cancer. He was a man amongst boys and he lives within me till this day. And I
6:09
think those things have really prepared me for life. You talk about being an athlete. I look at being an athlete is
6:16
called the training grounds, right? We we think life is a playground, but life is a battleground. Being an
6:22
athlete is preparing you for the battleground. It's not who you are, right? That's not your identity. Your
6:28
identity is in Christ. And so what you're doing as an athlete is preparing you for your assignment. If you fall in
6:34
sports, you get back up. If you want to become strong in the weight room, you add more weight on the bar. So when God
6:39
put weights on your shoulder, don't ask him to take the weight off. Ask him to give you broader shoulders.
6:46
You say you're the biggest and the baddest. The only way to show you is to get put in the fire.
6:50
Okay, I guess we should end the show right now. Show's over. Like that. That's brilliant. Your your greatest
6:56
accomplishment as a player. What do you what do you think that is when you say when you look back and say
7:03
this game or this moment was my defining moment as an athlete? What what would that be? Showing the youth that we are more than
7:11
athletes. Wow. So you don't even So it's not a play. It's you you never played the game
7:17
just for the play. Is is something greater for you? Absolutely. Football wasn't what God
7:22
created me to do my whole life. I'm here to be his hands and feet. Like I mentioned before, football was the
7:28
training ground for my assignment. If I didn't know how to get back up in football, I don't think I would have got
7:34
back up after my accident. Yeah, man. So, so I want to talk about that because a lot of people out there, they know,
7:41
some some don't. You know, it's a different I feel like in watching you and all the different people you speak
7:47
to, you're going to have an opportunity to speak to a very different crowd today. On less than one percent, but I've
7:53
seen pictures, I've seen video. So tell me about this accident. Yeah, so July 21st, 2023, a day that I
8:02
will never forget. It was 3 days before NFL training camp. I found myself trapped between a tree and a truck. It
8:08
was raining that day. I was coming back from Huntsville, Alabama, and I crashed into a tree. And I remember waking up
8:14
after I had blacked out on impact. And I reached for my phone. And as I reached for my phone, I didn't realize that I
8:21
was face to face with a tree until after I reached for the phone. And when I reached, I looked at my hand. I had
8:26
blood on my hand. And in that moment, I realized my leg was smashed, but I didn't know how severe it was. And as I
8:34
looked face to face, I saw the tree. And I realized there was no windshield. It was 4:40 a.m. in the morning, and it was
8:40
raining in the vehicle. And I began to call on Jesus in that moment. And as I begin to call on Jesus, the state
8:47
trooper probably arrived within 10 minutes of me being on the scene. He arrived on the scene. He went to my
8:52
little brother's side because he thought I was dead on the scene. If you see pictures of the accident,
8:58
you wouldn't think I would be alive. And so he went to my brother's side and my brother wasn't awake at the time and he
9:04
said, "Is anyone on the other side?" I said, "Officer," I said, "Can you come to my side?" He began to go around the
9:10
truck. He came to my side. He asked for my name, my information. And he began to walk away. And as he walked away, I
9:18
said, "Officer," I said, "Can you come back?" He came back. Like I said, do you mind holding my hand and let's pray?
9:27
I don't know how to take I don't know how to take that. I don't know how to take that. I got to stop for a minute.
9:36
So you you you are in pain. In pain.
9:42
He walks away from you because he's dismissing you or so. He was going to call someone um call
9:48
backup EMTs to let them know what had happened. And um and as I called him
9:53
back, I said, "Sir," I said, "Can you hold my hand and let's pray?" Not knowing that I would be fighting for my life for 5 hours trapped in the truck.
10:01
Yeah. Yeah. So now you're trapped. Yes, sir.
10:06
Between the truck and the tree for five hours. He goes and gets his calling. Yes, sir. And nobody's coming.
10:13
They came. They eventually came. The EMTs arrived on the scene with them and 3 hours had passed by after they had
10:20
gotten my brother out within an hour. They transported him to UAB hospital via vehicle and the helicopter had landed in
10:27
the middle of the interstate. Yeah. The road was blocked off for about 6 hours. And uh I remember feeling the wind from
10:34
the helicopter was hot. It was middle of July. The end of July was hot. It was raining and it was very humid inside
10:40
this vehicle and it's like noon now. It's like 11 and this was about when the helicopter
10:46
arrived on the scene. This had to be about an hour or 2 hours later. So this was about 7 a.m. in the morning,
10:52
6 something in the morning. And I didn't get out this truck until about close to 11:00 a.m.
10:59
So in those 3 hours, they thought I wasn't going to make it because it took 3 hours for them to call my mom. I knew
11:05
that it took three hours because my mom told me the time they called her, right? And said, "Ma'am, your son has been
11:11
trapped in the truck. There's nothing we can do in this moment besides to amputate his leg on the scene." They
11:17
tried pulling the vehicle out the tree at least three times. Each time they pull the vehicle out of the tree, it
11:23
began to catch on fire. And I remember the firefighter, he said, "Good thing is diesel because it burns slow." Now, I
11:30
was up the entire time. You're awake. You're you're you're in it and you're watching everything. Watching everything. Not once did I shed
11:37
a tear. Not once did I question God. Matter of fact, I said, "Although I can't see you, I trust you." I looked in
11:42
the mirror and told God that. I said, "Although I can't see you, I trust you." I did not see God, but I trusted God
11:49
because I've seen what he done in my life prior. Are you thinking about football at this time at all? No, I'm thinking about life. My son, my
11:56
mom, my son was like 5 months old at that time. Your son was 5 months old. I just want to get to my baby. I don't
12:02
care about my leg. When they came back and told me they're going to have have to amputate my leg, I said, "Let's do
12:07
it." Because I knew this wasn't going to dictate me for my mind don't follow my
12:13
body. My body follows my mind. And if I say I'm a lion,
12:18
you're a lion. I'm a lion. Because a lion, he licks his wounds and he keep walking.
12:26
I'm sorry, man. I I I should be a better host, but you're cutting me deep on all of these things. A lion, you you your
12:34
mind your body follows your mind. That's so true. You I kind of joke about stuff like that playing basketball. I see I
12:41
was I wasn't smart. I mean, I'm I'm I probably wouldn't have been as good as
12:46
you were, but I have a football body, you know? I'm I'm five, you know, like I'm not I'm not built like a basketball
12:53
player. I've never been. And I was I was one I was 178 graduating from high school like diesel, you know, like
12:59
solid. Yes, sir. Not not long and thin. But
13:04
playing basketball when you're short when you're small is is a different world, right? I mean, you're always
13:10
being doubted. And it's funny you say that. Like in my mind, I wake up, I'm 6'5. I tell everybody I wake up in the
13:16
morning, I'm 6'5. Like literally, I walk like that. I'm ducking. I'm getting on the air in the air in the plane the
13:22
ducking because in my mind that's how I feel. So you're the first person I've ever really met and talked to that has
13:29
had that same mindset.
13:24
So you so so they amputate on the scene.
13:34
On the scene they Now tell me that they I mean cuz you know I'm I'm a physician so they got you IVed up and
13:39
Yeah. So matter of fact I made eye contact with the surgeon. He drove all the way from UAB. So it's an hour
13:46
and 30 from Coleman because the helicopter had already landed because they thought they were going to be able to get me out before
13:52
and then bring him back and bring me back but they weren't able to. And so I remember he was driving a
13:57
range rover but the state trooper was escorting them. So I remember all of this vividly. He end up coming back
14:03
around. He was able to come back around and he leaned over in the vehicle. The truck was sideways. He leaned over. He
14:10
said, "I'm ready to cut you out." And he began to cut my leg. I was up and I
14:15
said, "Sir," I said, "Um, it's burning." And he thought I was sleep that he
14:20
thought they had put me to sleep. That's when they began to give me the IV and I passed out.
14:26
Woke up on the helicopter, woke back up at UAB, getting off the roof heading
14:32
into surgery. Last time I woke up was to my mom and I woke up with tears in my
14:37
eyes, not because of what I went through, but because I got the opportunity to grow through it. Yeah.
14:43
To see another day. Yeah. And and I was grateful because I understood that gratitude is the
14:48
attitude that determines my latitude. Man, what good is a story without adversity? And so my mom, I told her, I
14:56
said, "Mom, I made it." And the second one is by far the most powerful out of my whole story and it gets me every
15:02
time. She had a Bible in her hand, Dr. Tomlinson. I said, "Mama," I said, "Can you feed my spirit?"
15:09
Because I understood in this next chapter of my life, I couldn't have a malnourished spirit. Yes, I look good
15:15
physically, but I also look good spiritually. Yeah. Because you are what you eat. If you eat
15:20
bad, your body look bad. If you eat bad spiritually, you going to have a your spirit going to be bad. So, I eat good
15:27
spiritually as well. I feed my spirit 20 years from now.
15:34
What do you want to do? What I I you know listen so just so everybody knows I
15:42
the way we met Yes sir is I'm I'm you know I'm doing my Instagram thing and I always kind I'll
15:49
be honest a lot of people I look for like who's got a great story you know and I don't we didn't know right we
15:54
didn't know each other and what I do I just hit you DM'd you and I said you
16:00
have an amazing story you know would you be on the on the podcast and you immediately you didn't even question it.
16:06
You didn't know who I was. I could have been a serial killer. You were just like, I'm there. What What I'm going to
16:14
get back to the 20 years from now, but what what what how did your spirit move you to be able to say, I want to be a
16:20
part of that. Well, anytime I get the opportunity to share my story, I want to. Yeah. Because that's another crowd or an
16:27
audience that I can impact and reach. Right. I'm just a little old boy from Eufaula, Alabama.
16:34
Now I'm able to impact more lives with my story which need to be heard. The Uphill Climb to KD Hill story.
16:40
Yeah. And this is only the beginning. I'm 25 years old and eyes have not seen or ears
16:45
have heard the things that the Lord is going to do for me and my family. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Or and and and the other people
16:52
that you impact impact as well. And his impact as well. So 20 years from now, right, everything works out the way
16:59
you think you see you foresee this. Yes sir. What would what would KD Hill look like at 45?
16:59
At 45, KD Hill will will be running the Be the Light School in Birmingham,
17:13
Alabama. I will be helping homeless individuals get their GED, um, learn a
17:18
trade, plumbing, welding, roofing. Um, it will be over on 100 acres in Birmingham, Alabama. Um, we will have
17:25
horses there. It will be like a rehabilitation center for the homeless. Um, you you have homeless shelters, but
17:31
I want to be able to help them get back on their feet. How to help them build generational wealth financially. Um, be
17:37
able to to see places that they never seen. Take them on retreats to Gatlinburg, to Atlanta, to the
17:42
aquarium, to to the mountains, to Dallas, right? To the beach. Um, be able to have dogs to where they can raise
17:49
them up from puppies as emotional support animals. Be able to to to show
17:55
them that they are somebody, right? because the world will lie to them and tell them that they are nobody, but we
18:01
all are somebody because we are children of God. And um I just want them to know
18:06
that they are the light as well. And that's where I see myself in 20 years from now running the Be the Light School
18:12
through my foundation for the homeless. You've already I guess you've thought about this. I have a PDF already set for you.
18:19
You got a PDF? Absolutely. You got to send it to me. Yes, sir. I I've learned that if you live your life in faith, you allow God
18:25
to write your story. Wow. But if you live your life in fear, you allow the enemy to write your story.
18:31
I've been working at Walmart for 8 months. Dr. Tomlinson. Okay. So, wait, wait, wait, wait. We we talked about this walk. So,
18:38
KD Hill, I mean, you you were on pace. You You were going to make the league. You were
18:43
going to make the league. I I saw you. You know what you did. I saw highlights. You get in this terrible accident.
18:51
You're not even worried about your career. No. And now you walked in and you I we
18:57
just so everybody knows I was like hey you know what are you doing? What are you you know just trying to get a vibe
19:02
before we walk in here and you said I want to tell everybody about what I do.
19:08
Yeah. And so and what you do working at Walmart I actually God has spoke to me
19:15
while I was at Walmart. Um one I'm going start off with this. I was eating
19:20
breakfast with a group of friends and it was like four of us. Every table had two
19:26
to a table and we were waiting for a long time and we noticed that people
19:31
that were coming after us were getting their food before us and they were complaining. One of the guys were
19:37
complaining about how long the wait had been. And the spirit began to speak to me and it was this Dr. Tomlinson.
19:46
Bigger the order, the longer the wait. The smaller the order, the shorter the
19:53
wait. I've been dreaming big dreams ever since my accident, before my accident. This is
20:00
what God does. Me being at Walmart is a step to the stage, right? Many times we
20:07
want to skip the step and hop straight on the stage. I had a good friend tell me this before. The stage reveals your
20:14
character. The steps build your character. And if you understand that, you'll be
20:19
okay with small beginnings. Because this is what God told me while I was at Walmart. He said, "Son, small beginnings
20:26
lead to big endings. Men may despise small beginnings, but God encourages them because it is in the
20:33
small that shows man's faithfulness." Many times in life, God isn't going to give you the big box right away.
20:39
Yeah. He's going to give it to you in a small box. Yeah. Because what's inside the small box is going to determine how big the
20:45
big box will be based off your faithfulness with the small box. See, we think that the small box don't lead to
20:51
the big box, but in reality, it does lead to the big box. And so, me being at Walmart knowing that
20:58
God has so much more for me, right? I went from being in the wilderness after my accident, stepping out on faith,
21:05
being on Good Morning America. Hey, my story is about to light up. When it it didn't it did not, which caused me to
21:12
work at Walmart for 8 months in the wilderness again. Although with me being in the unfamiliar, not once did I lose
21:19
my vision because I did not go off what I see. I went off what I've seen.
21:23
Yeah. When I was in the hospital, God gave me two visions. The first vision, I was walking down a a brick pave road with
21:31
many mansions. The second vision, I was looking up and as I was looking up,
21:38
there were blue pillows with gold writing on it and it said blessings. And every time I looked up, it kept getting
21:45
higher and it was in a room and it kept getting higher. And so I go off that every single day. Despite what my
21:50
yesterday may look like, despite what today may look like, it's all for my good. You know, you said something. You said a
21:56
lot already. And we I mean, listen, this thing about to be four hours. This is going to be one of them long ones. I'm
22:02
just telling you, Jordan, hey, you know the one thing that I I'm struggling with right now. So, you're
22:08
going to do therapy. You know, I I'll you can send me a bill. You're going to do some therapy for me. So,
22:15
I I I I'm a I'm a writer, you know, like that's a struggle for me cuz I'm a I'm
22:21
also in this CEO role. And a lot of CEOs for big companies, they write they write
22:27
books just cuz that's what they tell you to do. Oh, you got to tell the story. But I don't want that's not what I write about. If you read my book and see what
22:33
I write about, I want to be a writer who happens to be a CEO. And what is interesting is that product
22:41
doesn't matter. Doesn't matter how good or bad your story is or what you write
22:47
about. Your platform is what sells books, right? And I think in my mind, I
22:53
always always equate selling books to doing well. not not necessarily financially, but as far as getting my
22:59
message out. And what you said is so brilliant because
23:05
the world is not a meritocracy anymore. The the thing that struck me when you said it was that you're on Good Morning
23:10
America. There's a lot of cats on Good Morning America that don't deserve to be
23:16
on Good Morning America, right Jordan? Like it's a lot of people on there. I'm like, "Okay, you you know, you made a
23:21
new wristband. Um or you did, you know, you did a Tik Tok dance. This is a father daughter. They rap all the time.
23:27
It's cool. Like, but you know what I mean? You're not really changing the world. There's a situation where you're changing the world. You have this
23:33
amazing experience and it didn't get the traction that you thought or that I that I thought hearing the story. And I've
23:40
realized that in this world, we've moved away from meritocracy. We've moved away from just the stories. But I love what
23:47
you said, which has inspired me. And that's why I'm going to keep writing because again, it's sort of like how you
23:53
respond. If you if you respond that way in the small box, as you say, then you
23:58
can't do Walmart the way I know you do Walmart. Yeah.
24:04
Then how are you going to do the big thing? Absolutely. I had a pastor tell me this. He said, KD, if you think you too big
24:11
for a small church, you too small for a big church.
24:16
And that's how I live my life at Walmart. I treat Walmart just the same way as I'm feeling a Mercedes-Benz
24:23
Superdome. Yeah, there is impact everywhere. But you were excited. You said you were
24:28
excited because you got promoted. Absolutely, man. I got a picture in my phone the first day I got hired. It was
24:35
my first job ever. My whole life I played football. My mom said, "Son, you don't have to get a job. Get a degree.
24:42
Get your scholarship so I don't got to pay for college." Graduated high school with over 40 offers.
24:47
I said, "I got you, ma." Worked out twice a day. worked out more than what I did with the team because mama I was going to make sure
24:53
gonna be all right. And so I never had a job. That was my job until I worked at Walmart. And so I took a picture because
25:01
I wanted to show my son and my daughter one day this was my small beginning. And
25:07
now you see where I'm at today because God trusted me with this small beginning. And now because he trusted me
25:13
with it, look where he got me. And absolutely, I went from from pulling groceries on a knee scooter to now being
25:21
a cashier. And I smile. Until this day, if I'm not at work, you have people
25:27
asking about where I'm at. Yeah. I have people that come up to me, they say, "I don't care how long your line is, I'mma wait
25:33
just because of because you're change you're changing their life." Absolutely. Even though you're in a position and
25:38
role that shouldn't change lives. Absolutely. But once again, it's all about your perspective.
25:43
Yes, sir. Your perspective don't change the environment, right? It it may not change what's going
25:49
on, but it's going to change how you view the environment. Okay, listen. I'm I'm going to get
25:54
I got to get settled here. I want to go
26:00
to the dark places that you've potentially been to.
26:05
Yeah, absolutely. Do you have, because you're super positive. You're inspirational. Yes, sir.
26:10
But there's got to be those dark moments, man. To to be honest, since my accident, there's only been two of them. And I
26:16
remember vividly, and it's because of God's grace on my life. The the peace that he's given me, the peace that he
26:22
gives me, the the the the peace, the joy, the hope through all of this is amazing. And it's it's only a testament
26:29
of God's grace. So, as I look back, he's going to get the credit. Um the first time was when I finally got home after
26:35
my accident. I was on a bedside commode and I was listening to a gospel song and
26:41
it hit me. I just began to pour down in tears. Yeah. Because I did not vision myself in this
26:47
position. Yeah. But once again, those that are great will make a setback, a setup for the
26:54
ultimate comeback. Yeah. This was an opportunity, not an obstacle. Because what good is a store
27:00
without adversity? The last time was when I was working at Walmart. I came
27:06
home during the summer and I cried to my fiance because I wasn't where I envisioned myself
27:12
to be and I still trust God because I know that all things work together for the
27:18
good of those who love the Lord. What good is it to read the word if you don't believe the word? You got to believe it.
27:24
You got to stand on it. I tell a lot of people I don't stand on business. I stand on the word. I let go and I let
27:31
God and I trust them. That's what faith is all about. You trust in everything else, why not trust in the creator?
27:38
Don't trust in the creator. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's that is um you
27:45
know, when I get down, I'm I'm like you in a little in a in a way you have a lot
27:50
more inspiration. I I have a lot of anger. I'm my my base energy is anger. That's what energizes me when I see
27:57
something and I'm like that ain't right. And then I come back with more energy. whereas your energy is more
28:02
inspirational. But I think that the message I'm hearing from you to others that people that are out there is your
28:10
path is your path. And you know the thing about it is is that if you don't I
28:16
mean enjoyment is kind of the wrong word, right? It's all it's trust. It's fulfillment. Stuff is still going to be
28:22
hard, but if you're fulfilled in what you're doing, then it doesn't matter that it's hard. Like I always tell
28:28
people, they say, you know, you work hard. Like listen, it's not work if I'm
28:33
marching towards a goal. It's only work when I'm just worried about the check that's going to come.
28:39
Absolutely. You know, when it's when I'm inspired to do great things. So I I kind of shared a little bit about um you know,
28:46
my anger. But okay, so everybody I ask on the show, I say, "Tell me what you
28:52
think your superpower is." Now, just frame it a little bit. You know, it can't be I'm on time. You know, it can't
29:00
be um you know, I'm strong. Uh I mean, what do you think?
29:00
A superpower is something that only you
29:06
can do. Yeah. And when you do it, you don't lose any energy. You just man, you are just...this is the best day ever when you get to use
29:13
your superpower. So, what would you say that superpower is? Being able to impact anybody in the room
29:19
without even saying a word. People could just look at me and feel God's presence on me and they could just see the light
29:27
reflecting off of me. Where where did So where does that come from, though? You're 25. You've been through a you've
29:35
had you've been highs and lows. I mean, you don't see them as lows, but you know, externally. I mean, I could see
29:41
how people could see that. You're going to NFL or you might be going to the NFL to to you know, getting your leg
29:47
amputated. You've been through all this stuff, but you're only 25, bro. Like, yes, sir. How where does this come from? You said
29:52
your mom. Yep. But you are where does this where does this
29:59
where does this demeanor come from? Well, I like to tell a lot of people they I get that question asked a lot and
30:05
my response is you can't build a house in the day especially a house that is built on
30:10
solid foundation. And um we all going to hit rock bottom at some point in life.
30:15
But the thing about hitting rock bottom is is understanding who your rock is. The rock is Jesus at the bottom,
30:22
right? And so my mom instilled that in me at a young age from from Sunday school. My Sunday school teacher used to
30:28
make me get up in front of everyone and speak. So this was on my life the entire time. The calling the the assignment the
30:35
enemy tried to attack me at a young age by um making me want to be quiet where
30:40
with the older guys would tell me to to stop talking so much and encouraging people. But I would keep talking,
30:45
right? Because the enemy saw the anointing on my life, the anointing on my life and the calling and I did not stop talking.
30:52
And what we don't realize is, how can I word this correctly? Um, where the enemy
30:58
attacks you the most is where God is going to use you the most. And when you begin to realize that and understand
31:04
that you'll move differently. Yeah. You said you were on uh Good Morning America. Yep.
31:10
And then so you you also kind of allude to the fact that you didn't kind of get the traction you wanted. What did what
31:16
did that look like when you say that? What do you mean people cuz people can't I don't I don't see people hearing your
31:22
story and not it not resonating. Absolutely. So I went off the vision that God had given me in the beginning.
31:28
And so I'm thinking since I got Good Morning America 3 right here, this is my time. It wasn't my time.
31:34
Yeah. Sometimes you got to be okay with that. Yeah. Right. Sometimes and when you think it's
31:40
your time and it's not your time, you have to still work like it's your time. Right. You can't give up on your dream
31:45
because that's what the enemy wants you to do. you must continue to live your life in faith. And so I went back to work. I went back to working and
31:52
perfecting my craft. Yeah. Kept continue to to write my book, The Uphill Climb. Continue to work on my
31:57
articulation, the way I speak. Um being able to write speeches and everything. I I write my speeches off my iPhone.
32:04
Anybody that reaches out to me about speaking, I let them know. I handtailor my speeches to my audience. I don't just
32:11
say the same thing over and over. Each speech is based off my audience and how the spirit is going to use me.
32:17
And um man, for for me to be where I'm at today from from Walmart, it's crazy because
32:24
December this month is going to be my last month working at Walmart. Okay. Um not my will, but God's will. And I
32:31
did some research. I was in my my Bible study and someone said, "KD, do you understand and realize that the number
32:37
eight means new beginning? 8 months in December." And now I'm about
32:43
to take a leap of faith and focus on my speaking full time. Yeah. Well, you know, listen, I mean, anything we can do, I mean, obviously
32:50
when we put this out, um, I think that it you're you're you're inspirational in ways that you don't
32:55
even understand. I think your superpower, back to your superpower, you definitely have that effect. I mean, I just externally, you know, the impact
33:04
you have on people when you walk in a room, um, it's it's an aura, you know, it's an aura. So I listen if people
33:11
ain't listening y'all got a problem cuz this this dude this dude is different.
33:16
This dude is different. So okay. So I'm you know a little lighter. We've had a
33:21
lot of different players on you know football players. It's interesting like I told you before less than 1% for me is
33:28
about bringing in all these amazing people you know to help solve problems that we didn't think were solvable. Like
33:35
you know I'm in healthcare. Healthcare is not going to solve health care's problems, right? The football is not going to solve football's problem. It's
33:41
going to be us all coming together and getting different people with different ideas. So, but I want to ask you cuz
33:48
since I've had a few, you know, Hall of Famers, right, Jordan? I mean, we've had some we had some amazing guests. Who's
33:55
your favorite? Well, maybe who's the best of all time? The greatest of all time if you can pick one and then who's
34:01
the one that's your favorite? greatest of all time in any sport.
34:06
Well, let's stay I mean I Well, let's do the any sport next. Let's start with football. Football. I gotta go with Aaron Donald.
34:12
Oh, as with me playing defensive tackle. Yeah. Um he's only six feet, right?
34:19
He's a beast. He's a beast on just the way he he operates, right? Okay. Um his character on and off the field.
34:26
You don't hear too much about Aaron Donald anything negative off the field. And so I not only do I look at on the
34:32
field, who are you off the field, what he do back in his community at Pittsburgh for the youth, right? And so that's
34:39
important to me. Not only does he walk it, he talk it as well. Yeah. Yeah. So is that is that your
34:46
greatest and your favorite or is that your favorite? Um favorite. Okay.
34:51
Greatest I would say Ray Lewis. Ray Lewis, man. I remember growing up watching Ray Lewis just do his dance,
34:59
right? winning the Super Bowl. Ray Lewis is my my greatest of all time.
35:04
The things that he's doing out in the community, right? Yeah. Um his voice, he he has an anointing on
35:09
his voice. Um you can definitely see that his assignment is in ministry. It may not be in a pool pit, but it's
35:15
definitely using sports as his pool pit. Yeah, he uh in co uh he sent us a little
35:24
selfie video inspiring healthcare leaders. It was great. It was great. I did the same thing. I just, hey man. And
35:29
he just, you know, and we played it in front of the whole, you know, organization. And, you know, it was
35:35
great. That's crazy you say that because as you're as I'm listening you to you talk,
35:40
actually, I start thinking about Ray Lewis. Yeah. Cuz that's what that's what he reminded me of.
35:46
I'm biased, right? Cuz by the way, I'm I missed the lunch with LT today. I'm
35:51
sorry, LT. I know I was supposed to be at lunch with you, but as you know, I was busy and we had this podcast, but he
35:56
reminds me of LaDainian. that too. He reminds me and LaDainian's focus on you
36:02
know God you know just really like and the way you talk about God is not it's
36:08
not preach it's not you're not preaching you're just describing and in that describing you're inspirational so he he
36:15
he you know we got his jersey up there but um yeah so he he reminds me of that.
36:20
So, my greatest of all time in football, I'm torn. I get torn on this. Um, but
36:28
it's somewhere it's either I think it's Jerry Rice.
36:33
I think it's Jerry Rice, but it it's in my mind it's Randy Moss.
36:38
And the only thing about Randy and to your point about off the field and you know Randy
36:44
Randy if Randy had Jerry's situations cuz let's not let's not your situation
36:51
matters as a player. Oh, you can't be a great player just by yourself. You have to have the right
36:56
team, the right coach, the right environment. So Barry Sanders, yeah Barry Sanders, great example.
37:02
you know, there's no way that Barry, if Barry is in San Francisco or Dallas in the 80s and 90s, he's the greatest ever,
37:09
right? But, um, but what I see in in Randy is just I mean, Randy went through
37:15
some things. That's that's what I like. It's like it's not like I like the guy just did everything. Jerry kind of did
37:20
everything, but Randy went through some things and then bounced back and bounced back greater. Um, but you made you you jumped into the
37:27
greatest athlete. Now I'm curious. Well, most definitely. I got to go with you saying boat.
37:32
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
37:40
Go with you, say. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. So, you like the book? I'm going to give you a book. You like the book? Cuz Usain is in the book,
37:46
man. Yeah, I was expecting that. You have to. Yeah, have to. I I don't think anyone got
37:53
LeBron James, but the way just Usain Bolt operates consistency as well. He's
37:59
amazing and he and he disrupted the track guys. See, I'm Jamaican. So, the track guys look like me, little
38:05
5'9 stocky, you know, Usain came in and he was like, you look
38:10
at Usain in the race, halfway through the race, he is dead last. And when you look at the at the
38:17
finish line, he's winning by by, you know, 20 feet. So, no, that's great. That I'm I'm I want I can't argue what Should
38:24
I argue with that? I don't think of all time. I mean, MJ's a close MJ's close. MJ's
38:30
close cuz I think he's disruptive, too, right? I mean, the way he came in the game. Mike's Bo Jackson.
38:36
Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson. But see, yes, on Bo, but the problem with Bo is that he had these challenges,
38:44
right? So, he didn't put up numbers like that's the problem, right? But Bo, as a
38:49
pure like as a pure football guy, I mean, forget baseball. As a pure
38:54
football guy, probably like you're not going to beat you're not going to beat that. I mean, I I say um Hersel Walker.
39:01
He would have been elite if he would have not had the injury. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, he's a guy he doesn't he
39:07
doesn't waist. Yeah. He doesn't lift waist. He's just a push-up, sit-up.
39:12
Yeah. Yeah. So every time on this show we ask somebody what their superpower is.
39:18
Okay. We then we then call try to call somebody. So family member, friends.
39:23
Okay. So So we're going to get the set up. You got your earphones there. Call my mom.
39:29
Yeah. And there it is.
39:37
Hello. Hey ma. Hi. Hey. I'm on the podcast Less Than One Percent
39:43
with Dr. Tomlinson and he has a question for you. Okay. Okay. Hey, how are you?
39:50
I'm doing well. How are you doing, Dr. Tomlinson? Good. Good. Uh, sorry to bother you. I know this is a a little awkward, but um
39:58
we we try to By the way, listen, before we start, I just want to tell you, you raised the most amazing human that I've
40:04
ever met. So, um I just Thank you so much. He's he's a blessing. just just me meeting him has has changed my life. So,
40:11
thank you so much. Thank you. But we we we asked him a question and um
40:17
we try to validate it by asking a family member uh and he chose you to call and
40:23
we wanted to ask you what do you think that his superpower is?
40:33
his superpower. Um,
40:40
and while you think I'll just tell you a little more. So, when we talk about superpowers, we talk about, you know,
40:47
things that only he can do that bring him energy that, you know, uh, it's something that you do
40:53
that can change the world. Like my superpower is relentlessness. Like, I never stop. I'm you can't see me but I'm
40:59
a little guy and I'm always fighting and scrapping and trying to do things to change the world. So um
41:05
so understanding that what do you what do you think his superpower is? I would say overcoming adversity.
41:13
Okay. Okay. Um I would say that um
41:20
being resilient um that's just who he is.
41:26
So KD, what did you say your superpower was to me? So mom, I said that my superpower was to
41:32
be able to impact anyone, right? Any ethnicity, any background. Um, just
41:38
being able to walk into a room and people be able to feel God's presence and see the light that shines from
41:45
within me. Well, I agree with that as well.
41:50
I do I agree with that. Um, he's able to impact like you said. um anyone um
41:58
regardless of age um ethnicity, he's able to impact
42:04
anyone. So, I would say that as well. That's awesome. That's awesome. Well,
42:10
yeah, that thank you so much and um we apologize for barging into your – No problem. No problem at all.
42:17
Yeah, but he's he's really amazing. We've had a great uh you know podcast so far and we're going to we're going to
42:23
vibe some more and uh we we we thank you so much for you know for raising him and
42:29
thank you for being on the podcast. No problem at all. Thank you for having me.
42:35
Thank you mom. You're welcome. Y'all have a great day. All right. Bye.
42:42
Okay. Well, she she mom mom is coming up with like 18 superpowers.
42:47
That's a lot of this this cat is like is like a you know like Superman. He's like oh he got heat vision. He can fly. He's
42:56
super strength. That's that's how moms are, right? But yeah, I think I think I I I do think
43:02
that you underplay I mean again I just meeting you, reading
43:07
about you, watching you on Instagram like I think you underplay what she said
43:13
which is your resilience um your strength right it's a power that it's a
43:18
power that is very easy is in this day and age now as a as a 25year-old
43:24
is I know people who have everything everything like
43:29
money, fat, life, this, that, you know, parents, everything. Nothing bad has ever happened to them and they're
43:34
depressed, you know, they're or they're they're they're upset or they're not focused on
43:40
how they can impact the world. So, I think that that um those people to me are not resilient. They're not what I
43:46
call antifragile, right? Which is things that antifragile, that's a thing, something that can break you actually
43:52
makes you stronger. And I can see that with you. Yes, sir. Thank you. So we we talked
43:58
about 20 years from now like if you so I I don't know how much um after I stalked
44:06
you whether you stalked me or not, right?
44:05
So a little bit about my story is is that I I was in in some ways like you
44:14
I was on I was a rapper till I was 16. I was a rap. Like I was literally trying
44:20
to rap. That's what I wanted to do. And if you follow me on Instagram, you see like I'm posting hip-hop, you know,
44:25
whatever. every post I have has some kind of hip-hop because that's that's my soul. Like that's how I communicate.
44:31
Then I was 16. I was like, "Ah, I ain't I don't know if I'm good enough. We almost I almost got signed. Didn't get
44:37
signed, you know, like this ain't going to work out." And then I was playing soccer. I was actually on a national
44:42
soccer team, but then I switched to basketball because I love basketball, which was not the best idea from a
44:48
height perspective. Um, but fell in love with basketball. I mean, I just loved, you know, just loved the game and uh but
44:55
then went to college, played basketball, and at some point that ran out. Like it's like, okay, this ain't going to be
45:01
my thing. Went to medical school. Long story short,
45:06
you know, I never expected to have an impact beyond
45:12
rapping, sports that, you know, it's like you get a job. Like when I went to medical school, it's cuz I wanted to be
45:18
a doctor, but it's to get a job. I can get that job because I was kind of like I'm smart enough to pass these tests.
45:24
Then I got into this role. Well, not this role but my role previous and
45:31
this job came up the CEO. And I was like, I don't want to do that until
45:37
somebody told me that I couldn't and said that I had less than 1one percent chance of getting the job. And then it was like,
45:43
what are you talking about? And that's how, you know, that's where my energy came from, which is also not the best
45:50
cuz anger isn't always the best. You know what I mean? But, um, now, now I lost my
45:56
train of thought. But, you know, I think for you, what I noticed is I would be very interested to follow you
46:03
over the next 20, 30 years and see who you resonate with because
46:10
like I said, you're in a you're in a time where content is everything. You know what I mean? That's it's kind
46:16
of weird, right? It's like content is everything. and the content that you have and the places that you've spoken
46:22
already and will speak in the future, I think will move people in ways that you will be able to achieve what you what
46:28
you what you want to achieve.
46:30
Who's the most where's the the place
46:33
that you enjoyed speaking the most so far? You want the truth? Yeah. I say all of them
46:40
cuz I get to impact people. I get to share my story, man. I went and spoke at New Site High School in New Site,
46:45
Mississippi. Probably never heard of it. Places like that I really find enjoyment. I sat right there and took
46:52
pictures with some inmates that really impacted me. I gave all of them my book
46:57
because I believe in that. And um the the actually the officer was going to send the picture to their families for
47:03
me. That's what that's what it's all about, right? Now you you also have SEC Network.
47:09
You have a story is coming out. Yep. Which came out Friday. I posted the full video on my social media.
47:16
I'm super excited about that. And I'm sure that there will be more to come because of that. And
47:22
it was a 5 minute segment and I know more people want to hear more about the the story as well. So
47:28
yes sir. We won't tell anybody. We right next to the Big 12 so we'll let just don't let the SEC know.
47:34
Across the hall is I saw it. I told Carla I said I got to go in here.
47:40
Well I'll take you next door. We'll go. I mean actually we should see if Brett is here and just to say hi. um the CEO
47:46
of the big he's he's amazing. Um but yeah, so if there is, you know, one of
47:52
the things I like to do is, you know, you're gonna have a lot of different people listen to this.
47:57
Healthcare, entertain, a lot of different places.
47:59
What was what what what's one message like if I if we edit
48:05
all of it out? Yes, sir. What's one message from KD Hill that
48:10
is something that you want everybody to hear? Absolutely. It ain't even got to
48:16
be much, but it's these few words right here. If it did not create you, it can't
48:22
break you. Only your creator can break you. Fear not the created, but fear your
48:28
creator. Wow. Wow.
48:35
Okay. I got, you know, you know, I'm sitting here digesting. We got to put pen and paper so I can
48:41
write these things down. We can clip like every section of this and just there's something there.
48:46
Yeah. And I got one more. Yeah. This is something I like to say. I got it from a good friend of mine who has
48:52
passed away and I want to continue to carry his legacy. He always told me, he said, KD, never forget this. Adversity
49:00
is God's university. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I mean, I totally agree
49:08
with you that the the adversity is what makes you stronger, but just like you said with weights, you got to break down the muscle to to build up the muscle.
49:15
Absolutely. You know what I mean? So, I mean, so you you have a son, are you in my channel? Huh? Are you in my be the light channel?
49:21
Listen, man. Okay. This dude, this dude doesn't You don't understand. So, when I DM'd you,
49:29
I had already and I don't You manage your own Instagram? I do. Yeah, I do.
49:35
Yeah. So you understand like I'm I'm like okay and you you know I'll instant how the algorithm works once you once you start
49:41
clicking like like and commenting then it keeps coming up keep coming up and I'm like
49:46
and I and I remember saying I didn't even know you were 25 because I didn't look back I didn't look when was he at Ole Miss I didn't do
49:52
anything that I just you know read the story I said this dude is built different I that's that's exactly what I
49:58
said and when I DM'd you it's funny because the podcast is in a
50:03
weird place right Because when we started, Jordan, I mean, I'm giving him credit. We just got
50:10
an award for the podcast. When was it? Last week. It was on Yeah, it was on. He was mad at me cuz I was supposed to
50:16
bring the award and put it here. I didn't even bring it. I sitting at home. Um, but when we started it, everybody
50:21
was like, "What you doing?" You know, and I said, "No, no, no. I I want to bring these kind of people to the
50:28
forefront. Whether it's one person listening or whether it's a million people listening, these stories need to be out there." And right now we have a
50:35
lot of people trying to now they're seeing it and they're like, "Hey, I'm a less than one percent person. I, you know, I've
50:41
been through this, I've been through that." And so now we're starting to, you know, we're like, "Oh, you know, I don't know if you can make
50:48
it on here." You know, before we was begging, we were begging people. We're like, "Hey, can you please, baby, baby,
50:54
please?" You know, and now uh and now we have a special. So anyway, my point is, you know, point I get distracted. My
51:01
point is is that when when I connected with you and you said and I'm telling you I I I'll screenshot and send it to
51:07
you. It wasn't like what do you think? I don't know. Let me check. I mean you
51:14
said yes right away and I don't even think you fully knew cuz then I had to send you information. I was like yo we
51:19
in Dallas, you know. Yes, sir. So I mean you're you uh I think you are
51:26
going to impact the world in ways that that no one even knows yet. No one even knows yet. And anything we can do,
51:32
anything, you know, I can do to help with that, sir. Um, and I hope, you know, likewise, I mean, I I can even see with your
51:38
foundation. Yeah. I would love for us to connect with that cuz we have a foundation, too. It's
51:43
focused more on healthcare. Yes, sir. And taking care of that, you know, the unhoused community, but I can see where,
51:49
you know, we can do stuff together to to amplify communities. Thank you. So, man, I appreciate you. Thank you so
51:55
much for coming, brother. Thank you, man. It's an honor and it's a blessing. So, thank Yeah. Okay. So, wait a second. So, Dallas, you came to
52:02
Dallas. You doing anything? Um, when it worked out, when it worked out at Adaptive Training
52:08
Foundation. Oh, okay. So, Dave Aborro, um, he's the CEO and founder, former NFL player for the Rams.
52:15
And he now has this foundation for adaptive athletes. He take them through courses,
52:20
classes, three-month courses, and we've been friends for about over a year and a half. Yeah. and we kind of
52:27
connected through coach um Dabo at Clemson. Okay. And so I've been going there. Anytime I'm here, I go visit.
52:34
Oh, nice. Nice. Nice. So you got a chance to that that's great. That's great. And so you So what what's I mean
52:40
there's still some athlete in there. Absolutely. What I mean there's are there athletic things that you may do in
52:46
the future? So my dream is to run the 100 meter in the Parolympics. Wow.
52:51
So I was supposed to go to Chula Vista, California in October. Yeah, I'm about to have surgery again due to
52:57
the way my leg was amputated on the scene and the trauma. I have to get some bone spurs filed
53:03
and get TMR performed. Okay. After that, it's going to be like a three more three month process. That's
53:09
what they say. But I know how you do it in two weeks. I do it. Yeah, absolutely. And so, um, go through that and I'll be
53:16
back here in Dallas in May for the the course with Adaptive Training Foundation. Then I go to Chula Vista.
53:21
So, I'm going to be about 2:25 next year. Okay. Yes, sir. Okay. So, you then you're going to train
53:28
train for the 100 meter, man. Absolutely. What was your 40 time? So, my 40 was a 497. I had a What was my
53:36
10 yard split? 160 was my 10 yard split. I was 305. Okay. Yeah.
53:41
All right. Well, I now now that we're family, I have to tell you the story. Yes, sir.
53:48
You still recording? Yeah. Okay. Because I'm I'm be embarrassed by a lot of people by the story. So, so I
53:54
look like I could play football. I mean, just my body habitus is a more less of a basketball. So, so I'm in I'm in high
54:02
school, want to play basketball, go to play basketball, and we're doing sprints
54:07
on the on the football field in the fall. Well, who's on right? I mean, this football field this fall.
54:14
So, now mind you, I'm a track guy, 100 meter, ran ran a 105 and lost in my
54:22
junior year in the city in the city championship in Toronto. I'm from I'm from Canada. So, you know, I'm I'm thinking I'm fast,
54:29
right? So, I'm we're running 40s on the on the quad basically right next to the
54:36
football field. Football coach comes over and he's like, "Yo, talk to the the the basketball coach like, you kidding
54:43
me?" like he doesn't even what he don't even look like he should be in the gym with you and you know and I I love
54:49
football now I'm in Toronto I'm stuck watching the Buffalo Bills you
54:54
know so I watch that four four back to back to backto back losses in the Super Bowl
55:00
but anyway so I'm like okay cool so we get all we line everybody up
55:05
I'm killing I'm I'm smoking every there's I'm the fastest on the football team right so I'm like I'mma play
55:13
coach. Everybody's down. Everybody's down. So, I'm like, "Okay, now mind you, I have never played football in my life.
55:19
High school didn't have football, anything." So, we start we start working
55:25
out. So, you know, I don't know football. So, he's like, "I'm going to put you at wing back. You stand way back
55:30
there. We're going to pitch the ball to you. We know you can catch as you're a basketball player. When you get it, just
55:38
run straight for the sideline." He He knows exactly what coming. So So I
55:45
get it and I ha and I'm running straight from the sideline. Straight from the sideline and I'm killing. There's no
55:50
pass, no nothing. I'm killing 16, 18, 22, 10, 5, 50 yards. I'm killing. Like
55:57
I'm going to the league. What are you talking about? I'm a football guy.
56:04
So we keep going. We keep going. And then like you know and and uh you know strength index, right? Strength, right? Strength index. I'm
56:10
like third on the team. They do every squat, everything. I'm banging. I'm a football guy. Guys has accepted me. They
56:17
love me. This is great. Now, first day of pads. First day of pads. I put the thing on.
56:23
I'm like, you know, this is Now, have you ever worn pads? Oh, yeah. He's worn pads. You ever worn a helmet?
56:29
Yeah. I played football in in high school. The thing that a basketball player doesn't understand about wearing a helmet is you can't see.
56:35
You can't see. It's hard. Yeah. There's no peripheral nothing. Like you want to see over there, you got to spin
56:41
your head around and look that way, right? When people see these over the shoulder catches, that's tough in
56:47
football. It's not like you're doing it out in the yard. So lineup, wing back, pitch,
56:53
18 yards, 10. So now I'm like I'm I'm getting overly cocky.
57:01
Okay, I never played football before. And these dudes is kind of they're my they love me, but they're like, "Moo,
57:07
come on." Actually, they called me E back then. Um, so I get a pitch out. I grab it.
57:15
I see the line and I'm watching football on TV.
57:21
You know, I'm just going to And for some reason, I even switch hands. I don't know why I did. I had the ball out here
57:27
and I just switch hands because I'd seen him do it on TV. So, I'm I I you know,
57:32
just like basketball, I go to make a step. the guy who's coming at me, safety's coming at me, and I do the
57:38
step. He's out of bounds, man. I'm like, I'm going to the league.
57:44
And then I take another step inside. Bam. See, what I don't realize or what I
57:52
didn't realize is that as fast as I was, the gap between the fastest and the
57:58
slowest is not that much of a gap at all. It looks like a gap. You run the the the 40, right? My 40 time at that
58:05
time was like and it wasn't you know I'll let you know you guys do it do it more succinctly with the testing but I
58:12
was I got one that was a 453. I'm I'm thinking I'm fast but the guy behind me that hit me was only running
58:20
like like 49 like you said. You said 49. That's what it listen and you appreciate
58:26
this. So I cut back. I get clocked. All I hear is
58:33
and I'm like, "What? What is this sound? What who's making music?"
58:41
You know, and I'm kind of I'm looking around and I'm blinking because I can't Nothing's really clear. I mean, there's
58:47
images. I can see faces, but they're not really faces. So, I So, everybody's over
58:52
me. Half of them are laughing. Half of them are really worried. I took off my helmet. And I said, "Ain't that that's
58:58
got to be a technical foul or something." I mean, in basketball, that's a flagrant one.
59:04
So, I was I took my helmet off. I'm like, "No, bro. I'm I'm a basketball guy. I can't get hit like that."
59:09
Well, they they say football is what make basketball player.
59:15
I mean, it is a different It's a different sport, man. It's a different sport to be able to take that beating
59:22
and come back. When you see guys have Hall of Fame careers and be taking them hits for years and years and years is is
59:28
amazing. So anyway, I'm not a football guy, man. Yes, sir. You know, I just I just don't got it.
59:34
Hey, you built like one. You built like what? All right, man. All right. Anything else
59:40
you want to you want to Oh. Oh, so actually one thing I didn't do one thing I didn't do. So make put for this in. So
59:47
anything I know the book is out. Um, you know, where can people find the book? Where can people find you?

1:01:31
Yes, sir. So, I'll put this on here, man. All right.
1:01:38
So, what's what's where you headed now? Um, back to Birmingham, Alabama. Okay. Yes, sir.
1:01:44
Back to Walmart. Yeah. Yeah. Back to Walmart. Back to work, man. I worked at Walmart for a couple years.
1:01:50
It builds character. Oh, yeah. That's the thing. That's the thing that I think people don't really understand that that So, my my first job
1:01:57
was a was a factory job. I worked in a book factory, which is funny cuz I like to write now. And I remember I got in
1:02:03
trouble because all these guys there, these old guys were there. And I'm like, you know, you get what you get a print
1:02:09
out. It it printed it back and it list all the books. And then you had to run through the whole place, put the books
1:02:15
in the thing, tape it up, take it to the thing, and go ship it. Sometimes you had to cut open the boxes, you know, cuz the
1:02:21
books were all parcled up. And you would get paid based on how many boxes you
1:02:26
did. I'm like, don't tell me that. So I did, dude, I was doing like 20 boxes an
1:02:33
hour. Wow. So all of a sudden, man, I go in the break room and the guy took me in the break room and he's like, he's like,
1:02:41
"Sit down, boy." And I said, I said, "What's going on?" He said, "And man, you're not you're not going to be able
1:02:47
to do this." And I said, "What's wrong?" He said, "You messing it up for everybody." Cuz they were doing like maybe two boxes
1:02:54
an hour, but I was brand new. I'm like, "Hey, this is wild, man."
1:02:59
Hey, I was just thinking about it. I I want to say this on the podcast, Dr. Tomlinson. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. something that's
1:03:04
important for us to understand that's listening. He worked at Walmart. I work there. Now, Dr. Tomlinson worked at a
1:03:12
factory. This is what I want to tell you all. Never mistake the process for the end result.
1:03:18
Yes. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Surely there was a process. And surely there is a process, but never mistake it
1:03:24
for the end result. That's awesome. That's awesome. That's awesome.
