1:18

the people in the crowd was chanting my name as I walking out and more stuff. So that was all I needed. [singing]

1:32

[laughter]

1:34

[music]

1:36

[singing]

1:37

I got goosebumps.

1:40

[music]

1:44

[music]

1:47

Your path is your path. Stay committed.

1:49

Stay focused. Be disagreeable, optimistic, and relentless.

[music]

1:54

You are the less than one. All right, welcome to less than 1%.

2:00

Today is a special day for me. Uh uh we we'll get into it, but um you know I have a guest who larger than life in

2:09

many ways, more ways than one, but really just a special talent, special soul, special heart. Um, and uh, you

2:18

know, we I I I kind of plotted I kind of plotted, you know, to get him out here uh, on the podcast and uh, and he one day he just like, "Oh, man. I give up.

2:29

You know, I'm going to come on, man. You hit me up too much." But no, seriously, uh, True the Star. Yes, sir. Appreciate you coming out, you know.

2:37

And, uh, you know, I I won't share everything that I want to say about you yet. Um, but you know, overall I think you're I I know that you're gonna change

2:45

the world. I know that you're gonna change the world. Thank you. I certainly appreciate it.

2:48

Yeah. So So listen. So we um we kind of talked a little bit pre-show about less than 1% and uh the the idea that,

2:57

you know, I feel like there's a lot of underrated people out there. not underrated in their minds, but underrated as far as the way that they're,

3:04

you know, the way that they are, I would say, perceived by society, whether they're celebrated or not celebrated.

3:12

So, let's go back when this singing this singing talent you have.

3:17

When did that start? When when did you know when did you know like you're like, "Yeah, I got something special." Well, honestly, I I knew it kind of

3:25

later than most people. Um I um I started singing when I was younger when I was around 7 years old. I um my auntie

3:33

and uncle at the time I stayed in Jacksonville for like 2 years. They um I had a teacher and they told me to sing in front of my teacher. The first the

3:41

first song I ever saw I remember singing. It's a song by um I can'remember the four tops. Okay.

3:47

Oh, you're sweet as a honey bee like a honey st.

3:52

I love that song. [laughter] So, first song I ever sung, but in terms of like when I was really confident and like I had something that happened for

4:00

me when I was like 17, 17. I was in this program um this theater arts program and I was the shy I was always the shy kid.

4:07

I was so quiet and um I knew everybody but I was just quiet. I just didn't feel like I had, you know, the talent enough.

4:13

So, I always just kind of just stand off to the side. But one day, one of my um directors at the time, they um stopped me because they was trying to find

4:21

somebody to sing the song. And for like two hours, like hours, they everybody was auditioning. Nobody could like get

4:29

the song right. And the song was um It's a Man's World by James Brown. No, that's that's a tough song.

4:34

So everybody everybody just kept coming up singing and singing and they was just like, "No, this not it. No, this not it.

4:40

No, this." So me, I always listen to old school music. The fir hence the first song that I sung in my life. But uh they they said I walked past and they stopped

4:49

me. I was like, "Hey, sing this song." Like sing this song. So I sung it first try

4:57

[snorts]

4:57

just blew it up. And I remember my director at the time, she was like, "Don't you ever again." Like we sat here for hours

5:06

looking for somebody to sing this song and you could do it this whole time.

5:09

Don't you ever let an opportunity um pass you pass you ever again cuz you really you killed it. You killed it. So

5:17

that was when I really knew I had some and then I performed it. Show day the crowd went nuts. I felt like a celebrity. Everybody wanted to take

5:24

pictures that day. Everybody wanted to, you know, come up and man, you got something like you going to be on TV one day, man. You going and I'm a teenager

5:32

at this time. I'm I at this time I don't believe none of this. Everybody like I can't wait to see you on TV. I can't wait to see you on the news. I can't wait to see you doing this. Yeah.

5:39

So that's when I really knew like okay I I I might I might have a little something and then over time just constantly doing it, you know, it definitely reassured me.

5:49

You [clears throat] I mean are you a shy are you a shy person? Not anymore.

5:53

Not anymore. So you that brought you out of your shell?

5:57

Um performing in general had brought me out of my shell in terms of like talking to people. I always been like a quiet kid. Um cuz I used to I used to get bullied when I was when I was young.

6:06

Like throughout my whole life just in just in general my life was very hard.

6:11

So it was one of them things where it's like it's it's hard to talk to people when you going through so much. And these are kids. These kids don't know that you got this going on and this

6:20

going on and that going on. All they see is all they see is the effects of what you have going on in your life.

6:27

So they picking at your effects the the effects of you know the things that you going through. Right. Right.

6:32

So, yeah, I was quiet. I always stayed to myself cuz I always told myself, as long as I be quiet, long as I just don't say nothing or don't talk back to them

6:40

or, you know, they they won't mess with me as much. You You remember any of those kids? Like, you remember them by name?

6:47

I don't I don't remember them by name, per se. I I'm terrible with names, but um a lot of them I know their faces for sure. Like, a lot of them I still see to

6:56

this day. A lot of them a lot of them now they actually congratulate me on everything that I've been doing. Um they actually you know and I I could be the

7:05

person to hold a grudge but I always always taught myself to you know have peace.

7:11

I I feel like I have a problem. I mean this the last I mean basically like the last five or six guests unless the 1%

7:19

don't hold grudges and I feel like y'all y'all talking about me cuz [laughter] I I feel like I'm like the grudge m like I remember

7:27

everybody's names. I remember dates and times. I'm like I'm like Dion Deion Sanders. like I I keep the receipts and

7:34

but you know but I I love that the way you're describing it because you know you really just focus on like hey what what am I going to do?

7:43

Yeah.

7:44

You know because if you focus I think people are right the therapy you're giving me now is good like hey if you're

7:52

so focused on them you really need to be focused on what you're doing. Yeah.

7:56

So I love that. So you so you're so you're now so you have that moment and now you're starting to pick up momentum like hey

8:04

you know I can do some things. So are you are you diving in listening to more trying to find your your voice cuz that's a little right. You got to find

8:12

Yeah, you do. It's a process. It's it took it took me longer than others to find that process but um I definitely after I figured like okay I might have a

8:22

little something. It it kind of gave me a really really big confident boost. A confidence boost. Um

8:28

so after that I pretty much told myself I'm going all in. Um at first I was living with my mother so I started

8:36

working a little bit and that kind of distracted me away and I worked a few jobs. Um I couldn't do it. I had the jobs was

8:44

like it's like when I was working thinking about something else.

8:47

Yeah. It was like something on the inside of me was like just burning. It was like let me out dog. Let me out. I I won't I can't come out if you keep on

8:54

working these jobs and keep on you know so some I just got the the bold idea to be like you know what I'm not going to

9:01

be able to do what I need to do and make it the way I want to make it if I'm constantly giving my give it eight hours

9:08

of my energy and throughout five however many times during the week to something outside of what my gift is.

9:17

Wow.

9:18

Um Wow. So, you know, everybody got their own route, but that was that was that was my that was my route. That's and that's what I was thinking at the time.

9:26

So, I I made the boldest decision ever.

9:29

And I was like, I'm going to quit my job. And since then, I haven't worked a job in six years. Wow.

9:35

Yeah. So, and just and just performing and performing. Just music. Just music.

9:39

And just so music, man.

9:43

Do you feel like you've gotten that break yet? I know we talked about this pre-show, like I mean, you know, um, no, not yet. No, trust.

9:51

No, trust me. It's it's so much more to come, but I I can see it now. It's right there.

9:57

I can I can see it now. I can I can I can all I can reach out and touch it now, you know? It's like I can see the light, you know? I've been I've been stuck in like the darkness just digging,

10:06

just digging with with no vision, with no idea of what's going to happen or where I'm going to go or how far it's

10:12

going to go or just no idea of that. But now I see the light. For sure.

10:17

Do you get down? Do you get times where you're like all the time? I'm I'm I'm always when

10:24

like it's it's I'm more more times down than I am up. Yeah. Um for sure.

10:30

Um but I have an understanding that, you know, this is temporary at the end of the day. And you know,

10:38

the greater the struggle, the the bigger, you know, you know, the bigger the bigger the success in my opinion. So I I totally agree. So, okay, little we

10:47

we'll come back to that. Come back to that. I'm going to go a little light here. So, your story inspired me. I want to play something after this. Uh, which

10:56

you were on American Idol. I think that's everybody want to see like Moo, stop talking to him. We want to see that. So, I'm going to put that up on the screen in a minute. But, um,

11:05

what I want to ask you is like I we were I think there's an inspiration.

11:11

You know, you saw my office. you know, Michael Jordan. I'm no Michael Jordan, but you know, I know a lot of people probably feel this way about him, but for me,

11:19

that was that was a goal. That was a target. And not just, you know, the game of basketball, but the mentality, you know, just even just the swag, all that stuff.

11:28

Is there a is there so I want to ask you two questions. One, is there a artist or, you know, whether it's in the past or now that you're like, that's my

11:38

Michael Jordan. That's who, you know, I aspire to be. Yeah.

11:41

And then who do you think the greatest of all time sort [clears throat] of artists, you know, are?

11:47

Um, that's a very broad statement for me.

11:51

That's a very broad question. Um, because it's so many people that I love. Yeah.

11:55

But I'll give you two people that for sure that I um that I look up to. One is James Brown.

12:03

Oh, for sure. James Brown for sure. Just just just him just him as a whole. James Brown for sure. And in terms of just

12:11

like v voice style and somebody that I just really love David Ruff from now now the person that I believe um is the

12:20

greatest of all time when it comes to the music thing you can't Michael Jackson Michael Jackson you really can't debate

12:27

that you know it's Michael all day every day two times on Sunday.

12:31

I got so I feel like so I agree my my go my goal has to be Michael right like Michael just changed the game. Yeah, it's impossible.

12:39

I'm Jamaican, so I throw Bob Marley in there just cuz Bob Marley is a great just because of the consciousness behind the not just the vocal, right? Cuz he,

12:47

you know, he's not Michael, but just the consciousness. But I think somebody for me that like changed musically cuz you know, I mean,

12:56

you know, just from a music standpoint is Stevie Wonder.

13:00

Oh, you see what I'm saying? Like I mean Stevie like I would definitely give the goat to to Mike because Mike took Mike

13:07

was pop. Mike Mike Mike is trying to sell records.

13:10

I don't feel like Stevie ever tried to sell records.

13:12

He he was making music, right? And like when you when you make me miss the harmonica,

13:20

[laughter]

13:21

when you make me miss the harmonica, you done you done did something to me cuz like so so Stevie Stevie Stevie he's I never

13:28

got a chance to see him. I know he's still actually doing small things.

13:33

So, I'm hoping that he can I'm hoping that I can see him.

13:36

Apparently, the there's this music conference that happens every year, the NAM show.

13:41

Apparently, he's there every year and he walks around.

13:42
Taking the leap to American Idol

13:43

Yeah, I've seen him walk around at that, but the last last year he was looking a little rough, you know what I mean? Like he was looking like he was, you know,

13:51

he's getting older. You know what I mean? Of course. But, uh but okay, so let So, we got MJ.

13:55

We agree on that. Let's Let's I want to play this uh cuz this I was intrigued watching this. Yeah.

14:02

So, tell us who you are, where you from, your age to star. I'm 24. I'm from Montgomery, Alabama. No way. Down the street.

14:10

Yeah. Down the street. Toss, man. All right. Yeah, man.

14:14

Any musical background in the family or just just you? My uncle Lo. Uncle who?

14:20

Lionel. [laughter] Sounds like a good individual. Wait, is he your uncle?

14:26

My first memory of music. Me and my mom was my first love music. Yeah.

14:34

He once tried to run away to Hollywood and he was just going to run away with a guitar and sing on the street.

14:41

I thought it was crazy. Stop.

14:43

Yeah, it was determined. [music] And I'm I'm glad you kept that energy, bro. Despite what anybody say about you, bro.

14:49

I appreciate it. For real. [music] Growing up was [music] tough. My mom was

14:58

on drugs. There was a lot of times we didn't have water on, lights on. I [music] had to take care of my little siblings.

15:07

My mama had a hard life. And truthfully,

15:09

[music]

15:10

my mom went through the same thing I had to go through. You know, history repeats [music] itself.

15:16

Eventually, our family stepped in and my mom got clean, but she was actually [music] really trying to change and make things better.

15:27

[music]

15:30

I lost my mom in 2022. [music] I had just started to understand.

15:38

[music]

15:39

I had just started to understand at that time and I had just started to forgive for a lot of [music] the things that we went through as kids. It was hard.

15:50

It was very hard.

16:00

[music]

16:01

This is a very special moment not only for me but for my family.

16:06

Can [music] you uh let me pause it right there? I want to for me it's more than auditioning.

16:11

[music] It's just about my family showing them that you can do anything that you can [music] put your mind to.

16:19

So that was that was tough. That was I mean I know it was tough for you to go through. Yeah.

16:26

And um and I know it's probably multiple takes. I mean right they're probably they they got to that's a big deal. But um that hit you hard.

16:33

It did.

16:35

Tell me about that. like you it sound it it felt like you had just gotten to the point where Mhm.

16:42

you know, you talked about being bullied and being shy and how you're coming out of your shell and you just now like I know what my life is like. I know who I am.

16:50

Mhm.

16:50

And uh and then she goes, "Yeah." And what happened? Did she uh

16:56

um so around that time I was um I I was stay on my I I when I first

17:05

um graduated and um started working and stuff and I first quit my job I was [clears throat] stay with my mother and

17:14

shortly after that you know me and my older brother we was like man we got to move out cuz we can't stay with mama cuz we died here.

17:20

So all the rules and everything. Um and when we moved out um

17:27

uh a lot a lot of a lot of stuff happened. Yeah.

17:31

Um and then one day we just get a random call from um our little siblings father um saying that you know your mom's in the hospital. You know

17:39

at first we I didn't think nothing of it cuz my mom always in the hospital. She always had like problems but she always was getting out too. [clears throat] You

17:47

know it was it was so so so regular for her. So in my mind I'm like, "Okay, let's go see mama. She probably all right. It's okay."

17:55

So even the way he was explaining, it didn't seem like everything was like super off or super crazy. Um so when we

18:03

finally got in there to see her and I seen all the tubes and stuff and the fact that she wasn't conscious, um

18:11

it really was like, "Oh, like, oh, hold up." Like this is serious.

18:16

Yeah. you know. Um, so during that time I um I still I had hope cuz I'm like my

18:24

mama's strong, you know. Yeah. Like throughout my whole life I never seen my mother give up like ever. Like even when you

18:33

know she was on drugs and like she she fought hard to get us back like hard for

18:40

like two three years straight clean you know to get us back and and got us back you know. She she did what she said she was going to do.

18:48

Um so when it happened um it definitely hit me hard because that's your that's your mom. Yeah.

18:55

That that's that that's your mother. You only get one. I know.

18:59

Like I know.

19:00

And and I was 21 at the time. I'm just now technically grown. So in my mind it was like man like my mama had a hard life.

19:10

Yeah.

19:10

Man, I want to go take my mom out. I want I want to I want to go do karaoke with my mama. I want my mama to come to my shows. I want my mama to, you know, come on American Idol with me, you know.

19:21

I want my mama to see all of these great things that her son is doing. And my mom always been supportive of my singing.

19:27

Um, always like my little the songs I was making at the time, they was they was they was trash. But but mom's always

19:34

but but she she she's like, "Listen to my song song." My my son my son can sing. Listen to his music. listen to like like my mom always just been like a

19:43

hype man type of type of deal and she always just been somebody that I just always wanted to make proud, you know?

19:51

Um cuz I as a kid I I I always had always was a little and because of our situation, I always was

19:58

like kind of like butting heads with my mom. Um just because of like the things Yeah.

20:04

that was going on around the house. So it's like we always uh but me and my mom was like the best of friends. Like we'll butt heads.

20:08
The audition that changed everything

20:13

We'd be in the room watching TV watching American Idol right after literally watching American Idol.

20:19

Like I mean there's that picture of it right when you I was a child but it's like we we literally watch watching this stuff

20:28

and me and my mom literally talking about it like like when I'm gonna get on American Idol. She was like, "Yeah, yeah." Like,

20:36

and then now you're there and now I'm there, but it's like a bittersweet feeling, you know, cuz it's like, you know, if my mom was here Yeah.

20:43

only if she was here to see it, like Yeah.

20:46

And I know she's watching, you know, for sure. But it's still it's like I'm I'm missing my piece. I'm I'm missing I'm missing a

20:54

piece of me, you know, like you don't really get that kind of love from nobody else. You only get that from one person. Yeah, you know, people come and go, you know,

21:02

even even when you fall in love, sometimes you can fall out of love. Um, but when it comes to that that mother

21:10

son, you know, just bun, like no matter what you do, you can go do the most horrible thing in the world, they'll be right there.

21:18

Your mom is still going to love you and still be there for you and still no matter what. So, it it hurt a little bit.

21:24

I appreciate you uh being able to talk about it, you know, to us. I mean, I know obviously you talked about it, but um you know, I

21:32

think that uh you know, I'm very private. I'm very private. So, it takes a lot for me to I was like that at first.

21:41

Yeah. And so, and I mean, in the book, I mean, I'm in in my in my book, I had to write about a lot of things I didn't want to. Um and

21:49

I my book didn't have anything in in it about me. It's it's it's it's a story about people and all these less than 1 percententers. publisher was like,

21:57

"Listen, you gotta write you gotta write some stuff here. You gotta show people who you are." Yeah.

22:02

Um, and I think in that moment, I I saw like I mean, we gonna we going to listen to you sing for sure. But that was not the highlight for me.

22:10

The highlight for me was seeing The other highlight for me was also your brother. Yeah.

22:16

And and you know, your brother like I don't know him. Yeah. We gonna talk about him a little bit. Yeah.

22:22

But I feel like I feel like he's sort of that rock. He's sort of that rock. And you can see like, you know, he got one tear and I saw the tear before it even

22:31

came down. I saw the tear just hanging in his Yeah. It was just it was just hanging there. Yeah.

22:36

But he didn't really want to he didn't let it out. He didn't let it out, but it it it it just broke through and uh and I thought that that was amazing

22:44

because he he he he felt all of that stuff that you had inside, but he was still being that rock.

22:49

Yeah. like n my brother that boy crazy [laughter] but uh

22:58

but uh um yeah that's that my so me and him we my brother we um he was with he was with me the whole time.

23:07

Yeah. Um throughout throughout the childhood.

23:10

So he know like more than any any of my other siblings like the stuff that I had to go through and you know all the trials and

23:18

things that I had to like he know you know and my brother he has his own trials and things that things that he um going through as well but

23:25

um he was there you know he was there he was there through it all and like me like you know it's the older brother he only two years younger than me so he already feel like he my equal. Okay.

23:34

Okay. Well, it's always going to be like that big brother, little brother kind of thing. And we always used to just butt heads and stuff, but like me me and my little brother like he

23:43

I know for a fact like he got a big heart. He got a super big heart. He loves hard, you know? He be trying to put on this tough tough interior a lot of time and

23:52

try to be but deep down inside like he he is the most nicest, most kindest, most loving person that you

23:59

Yeah. I kind of feel like, man, if I wanted someone to roll up on somebody else, I'd probably take him with me.

24:04

No, for sure. Yeah, [laughter] that was crazy.

24:08

I'm trying to Before we play, I'm I I know I'm I'm I'm holding everybody back from seeing this video. Um, you've been through a lot of things.

24:18

Some we talking about, some we not going to talk about.

24:22

And you are where you are. So all of the things that had happened brought you to this point in life.

24:29

Yeah.

24:31

Would you sacrifice where you are now to not go through those things?

24:39

You know, I'm not even I'm not going to lie. Like

24:47

a lot of people would instantly be like, "No." But it it's really something to think about because the things I've had to deal with. Yeah.

24:55

You know, uh it's so much like it's so much like if I was to tell it all,

25:03

it would be too much for like one person to handle. It's like whoa. Like there is no way that you had to deal with this stuff.

25:12

There is no possible way. No, no way. No way. this this one person that's young had to deal with all of this. There is no way impossible.

25:21

So, it's definitely a thought, but in the grand scheme of things, seeing where I am now, um

25:29

I wouldn't I wouldn't go back, but I I I it's it's I strongly have to consider it, you know? It it's like it's like,

25:36

man, if I if I It's a lot of things I look back on, it's like, if this didn't happen to me, like, I wouldn't have acted this way or did or you know what I'm saying? Yeah.

25:47

Like the mistakes that I made throughout my life, I wouldn't have made those mistakes if this didn't happen or if I had somebody there to teach me or if I

25:54

had this or I've had a steady household, if I had good income in my house. But at the same time, the success that I'm about to receive

26:02

is Yeah. It's just it it it is everything in life is a sacrifice no matter what.

26:08

And I truly believe that the foundation like the bigger your struggle I truly believe the the bigger

26:17

the success like I believe God puts um

26:24

the toughest things on the most special people.

26:29

Yeah. Um, everybody um in this world has has a purpose and has something that they need to fulfill and God puts that inside us.

26:42

So no matter what we do or no matter how how much we try to run away from it, it's always going to be a fire of something deep within us that's going to

26:50

be like, "No, you're not. No, you need to be doing what you need to actually be doing. You you're going the wrong way.

26:56

You're doing the wrong thing." And I picked up on that fire inside of me very quickly. Um,

27:06

and I told myself I'll never give up cuz I never seen my mama give up, you know.

27:12

Like my mama was a drug addict, you know, but she never stopped loving and caring for her children. I never once

27:19

saw my mama quit. She could have just been like, I'mma give you all the way.

27:23

I'm going just let y'all have it. She didn't do that, you know. And we she she she got six kids. All six of us living

27:30

in one house, you know. All of us are young, naive teenagers, little babies, like all in one house, an adult.

27:41

Yeah.

27:41

I never seem to give up. So it's like, yeah, I can't do that. My And my mama had it harder than me. Yeah. So, who am I to to to give up on that?

27:51

Who am I to be like, "Oh, I shouldn't be going through this." Why not you? Yeah. Yeah.

27:56

You know why? Why not? Why not you? Why why not why not why not it be you to to change everybody life around here?

28:03

Why why not why not you? Because I I truly believe that a lot of people blessings and a lot of lot of people opportunities are

28:12

on your shoulders like you you you are put here as a vessel to change people lives.

28:20

That's that's me, you know, and me achieving my goals dictates some some

28:28

somebody blessing and somebody else's somebody else's is really I wouldn't even say uh I so you know ER doc I

28:37

trained to be an ER doc right I do a lot of the things now but that's and it's funny like I don't know how many patients I've seen in my lifetime a lot

28:46

you know um and I may not remember each and every single patient. Mhm.

28:52

Right. But probably almost every patient remembers me because it was a traumatic period or they, you know, they got an

29:00

illness or they're going through something. So, I I I love I love what you said. Um, and just thinking back as you mentioned some

29:07

of those things, there are some things that happened to me, you know, few maybe two or three things that hurt hurt just like as if it

29:17

happened yesterday. M like I I can't, you know, I I've I've been able to package it up. Yeah.

29:24

So that other people don't know, but I'm telling you like it feels like it happened yesterday. And uh you know, I'm

29:31

I'm I'm on the plane one time and I've told a couple people this. I'm I'm on the plane. You know, you scroll through pictures, right? You scroll, you know,

29:39

look in the thing and I'm and I'm seeing the my kids, you know, when they're young and I'm I'm I'm my face is wet.

29:47

I'm balling my lady next to me is like, "Sir, are you okay?" Because, you know, [clears throat] but it's it's very interesting, I think. Um, and that's a

29:56

human condition, right? I mean, that's that's what religion that's what faith is all about is the fact that you go through these things, but you know, uh,

30:05

that that days like this are are a result of it. So, speaking of which, let's then now we're going to get to the uh to the nitty-gritty.

30:15

Yeah. to to to what

30:20

[singing]

30:22

[music] a million miles away I write a letter

30:30

[music]

30:30

each and every day cuz I need nothing.

30:36

[music]

30:36

So nothing [singing] can never change this love I have for [music and singing] you.

30:47

Wo

30:49

[music]

30:51

my cherry [music and singing] pie and oh your cake and ice cream.

31:03

Oh, you sure [singing] my eyes

31:08

[music]

31:08

and everything nice.

31:12

You're the girl of my my my my my

31:15

[music and singing]

31:15

dreams. But [screaming] if you want Nancy to lead me [singing]

31:23

wrong [music] when you got back, baby, I just say, "Well, come on." [music]

31:31

Cuz I need nothing. Oh, nothing [music and singing] can never change

31:37

this. Cuz I need nothing [music] can change

31:45

this love I have for you.

31:55

Yes.

31:57

So, I'm channeling out all the folks in Montgomery, Tusky, Auburn, Union Springs. They told me to give you a hug.

32:06

Ah, now we're proud of you, son. Thank you [laughter] so much. You did well. I love that.

32:11

You have a commanding [music] voice, but I think my favorite part was your delivery. It was completely intentional and [music] it it wasn't

32:20

trying to barrel over the song and show us all your big notes. [music] You were just delivering a story to us and it was very believable.

32:31

The first time in 3 days I had chills and I thought it was just so real and

32:39

genuine and I just cheer for you. I want to see your family have a blast [laughter] with all this if I'm being honest with you. Yeah, it's not real. Like it don't feel real.

32:50

It's like it's like one of them things where it's like you I to this day I I can't believe that

32:57

that happened. Like it doesn't it doesn't like it's just like a It's like a dream.

33:03

It's like you you It's like you're there but you're not there. Yeah.

33:08

Like I can't believe none of that that that happened. Like it's it's it's the craziest craziest thing. like you know

33:16

and you and it wasn't just I mean you got to go through don't you have to go through like yeah you got to go through how you even get there

33:23

it's a lot fun fact I actually auditioned for American Idol in the early 2000s like one of the first I

33:31

think maybe the third or fourth season Wow that's crazy it's a lot it's a lot no it's it's it is I think this season

33:39

when they was telling they they was telling us um u because they do virtual so they they're able to uh audition more contestants quicker instead of doing it

33:48

in person. I did mines in person. They only had one in person audition and it was in Nashville. So I I was it was a whole bunch of just you know country

33:56

artists and I was probably the only the tallest guy in the building like Lord Jesus. But I saw him outside and everybody was like oh that's not you

34:05

going crazy. But um they do a lot of virtual auditions and they told me that this season like it

34:11

was like over like a 100,000 people over like literally over a 100,000 people like audition and out of that 100,000 or

34:19

200,000 whatever only probably like three 400 get to

34:27

get actually get in front of the judges and out of that three 400 only like 130 people get it's different now too cuz I mean in the

34:34

earlier seasons They they let a lot of people in for for entertainment value, right? But now they're really serious about these singers.

34:42

And so they're they're they're picky about who they let in. They they really are. They really are.

34:46

You really they really got to like you a lot in order to just cuz it cuz it's so small now. Yeah. So small.

34:53

So So what is it like? Like so I mean now after that I mean obviously at some

35:00

point you're going through you're going through right? You made what? How far did you make it? Like third round. Third round. Third round. Yeah. Third round. Yeah.

35:07

Yes. Um going just audition um audition first. It was great. I boy. But they have you on like

35:14

a uh uh uh uh uh you doing this, you doing this, you doing this, you doing it's like Lord Jesus. Yeah.

35:20

Like man, I was not expecting that. Like I was tired. Like I was real deal tired.

35:26

Like it's a whole bunch of ripping and running. Like it's it's it's more doing videos and than singing like

35:35

cuz they're capturing content throughout that whole thing. Yes. It's like social media content.

35:39

Then you got to go do the interviews and all of this stuff. Like you kind of do it like before like you you get to the audition. I did my like the interview. I

35:47

did that before the audition. It's it's a lot of stuff. Then you got to go rehearsal. Then you got to talk to get on Zoom calls and talk to the people

35:56

there. Um, it's so much. And when even during Hollywood week, like that was crazy. Like Yeah. Yeah. Like

36:04

like it's funny cuz like during my Hollywood week performance, man, I was backstage

36:11

for like six, eight hours. Like I ate hours. I'm talking about straight

36:18

waiting to perform. And it's like sitting on a hard floor. They don't make you call. They It's like But that's the whole point.

36:21
Behind the scenes of American Idol

36:27

I was second to last and I ain't never been through nothing like that. So, it was like one of them moments where I was like, bro, like whoa, hold up. Wait a minute. My voice getting dry. Cuz I'm just sitting

36:35

here. I'm not talking. I'm like, and even if I do talk and saying, it's still like it's not going to help, [clears throat] you know, unless unless you have like the gadgets and stuff.

36:44

Everybody using gadgets. I was so this I'm like I'm not used to I'm used to just waking up.

36:48

When you say using gadgets, explain that.

36:50

Like like nebulizers. Yes. Um vaporizers. Um um they got vocal boxes, little vocal boxes. Um having like uh

36:59

teas and mints and certain like uh uh grethers pistols, all of that stuff. Um

37:06

I didn't know nothing about that when I was there. So when I went out there, I'm just like, "Oh man, I'm I'm kind of just winging it." You know, it still it still went it

37:15

went went pretty good, you know, cuz I made it to the to the next portion.

37:19

Yeah. But I like going through that, it definitely made me like yeah learn a lot of stuff

37:26

even with with the uh filming side of things and just filming my own content and even with like the fulfillment side,

37:33

the social media side, all of that. It's you learn a lot if if you learn if you want to learn. I always been like the type of guy to just want to get better.

37:42

Everybody do everything. You know what I'm saying? because I want to I want I want to do the do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do

37:46

do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do

37:46

do do do do do do do do do do do do do do the same things one day and I feel like I will end up doing it so it's a learning experience for sure. So you so you go through that, you you you're

37:54

you're devastated when you when you when you Nah, I mean you just like I mean at first at first Yes. But at that time cuz

38:05

I I I already wasn't feeling that well cuz my family my family wasn't there. It it was expensive, man. Like like when

38:12

even just them getting there to Nashville like they don't they they only pay for you. So anybody else extra that's coming like you gota you know

38:21

what I'm saying? So being around them they really kept my spirits up and kept me calm, right? Um me being by myself, I'm a overthinker. So I start to

38:29

overthink. I start being like, man, I ain't got this. I ain't got that. I'm looking at all these people doing this.

38:34

I'm like, bro, I'm slacking. Everybody here got gadgets and all this stuff and I ain't got nothing. I'm just here. So

38:43

I'm like, it was like a little nerves. I was definitely like first time I got nervous in a long like my audition I was

38:50

not nervous but backstage sitting for eight hours them nerves ain't got no choice but to creep up on you at some point cuz you waiting and they had and you were hearing all of this stuff.

39:00

Yeah. I wasn't even hearing like the other people saying you can't you can't really hear.

39:03

Okay. So they got you in they got Yeah. got you in the tunnel where you really can't hear much but I was second to last. But they already was high up on me.

39:10

They was I was like man this is the guy you know but I didn't have my family there. So I was just in my head and whatever. So when they eliminated me, I

39:17

was like, "Ah." But I kind of a piece of me I felt like I kind of felt it a little bit like it was coming.

39:22

So when I when I performed, even before I performed, I kind of felt like, man, this this might be like this might be it.

39:28

So when I went out there, I just went out and just had fun. I was like, you know what? You know what? I don't even care. I'm going to have fun. Uh I did I did my song.

39:37

The the people in the crowd was chanting my name as I walking out and more stuff.

39:38
Handling elimination and staying grounded

39:38

So that was all I needed and that was all I needed. So even when it it stalled a little bit, but I quickly like I was like, "Yeah, I'm I'm Yeah, it's

39:50

all right." So from that experience though, you you got a lot of you got a lot of interest in I mean, what's it like for you now?

39:59

Like, you know, you're out there, you're trying to you're trying to navigate this space cuz this space is not easy. No. I mean,

40:07

I went through it 30 years ago trying to rap, you know?

40:10

So, I went through that then. I can't imagine what it's like now.

40:15

Some people hitting you up that's not really trying to help.

40:18

And other people that you want to hit you up aren't hitting you up.

40:21

So, what's it like now? Like, how are you navigating that?

40:24

Um, I'm really just taking it day by day. Yeah.

40:28

Not allowing myself to get too like too stressed out. keeping keeping keep too stressed out or even just too happy

40:36

about anything. Um I keep it like in the middle. That way it's like I can, you know, deal with things a little bit better as they come.

40:44

Yeah.

40:45

Cuz I feel like if you're too low, you going to miss out on something that's that's really real. Right.

40:50

If you're too high, you can be high up on something that's not even really big.

40:53

Yeah. It's not going to happen. Like Yeah.

40:56

So [clears throat] I I kind of always just keep myself in the middle. But in terms of like everything that's going on, I feel like I control Yeah. um my destiny. I feel like I got the keys now. Yeah.

41:04

So, it's like everything is based on what I do. So, if somebody don't hit me up, then I'm I just got to work hard.

41:12

You know what I'm saying? Just work harder or or go to the next opportunity.

41:15

So, it's like just constantly doing things and constantly just doing stuff for myself. That's that's why I say being on American Idol really like helped me cuz I realized like

41:24

this is a production like like a lot of people they look at American as the one way as a one-way thing. When I went there, I I changed my mind. I was I'm

41:31

going to learn about what how are they doing what they do? How are they doing it? Instead of just being like, oh, I'm I'm just just being I want to win. I want to win. I want to win.

41:40

Yeah. I pretty much figured that out that wasn't going to happen. But I I I like I I could I could have won. But

41:49

deep down inside, I knew that wasn't my destiny. Um I just I just want my whole purpose. I just wanted to tell my story and cuz that's something that me and my

41:57

mom always talked about being on American Idol. So, I wasn't really thinking like winner winner chicken nitter. No, you know what I'm saying? I I was I was more so just thinking like I

42:05

want to go on here and show people who I am and I want people to fall in love with me as a person and also me me with my voice and I feel like I did that.

42:13

American a lot of times they're you're singing somebody else's song for sure.

42:17

And um I always find that that's kind of interesting, right? Cuz you know, you're always comparing it to the original. Mh.

42:25

Um, which is which is a weird thing cuz these are you're a creative. Do you are you creating your own stuff? Are you writing your own stuff? How is that?

42:32

Yeah, for sure. Uh, I'm actually in the process of making an album right now. All right.

42:37

Yeah, I'm still still making all the arrangements and things. I'm probably going to start recording probably like next month, but I mean I'm definitely in the process of making my own. I'm I'm an artist.

42:45

That's that's who I am at heart.

42:46

Um, I love singing like other people's songs, but I've been doing that for like for a living for like So, it's it's kind of drained.

42:53

And what And what genre? What what what's your style?

42:55

Um I'm I'm a I'm a chameleon. I do a little bit of everything. I don't I don't really do like one specific thing.

43:01

Especially with the new music that I'm about to make. It's about to be genre bending. It's not It's not about to be one specific genre. Like a lot of

43:08

people probably would think R&B soul music. Nah, it's not about to be that.

43:12

I'm I'mma have like it's going to have R&B soul elements, but it's more like it's going it's going to have a a

43:21

mainstream appeal, you know? Um, so it's going it's going to have I call it soul music. It's just music from my soul, you know. I I really can't put a genre on it.

43:29

Now, are you going to are you going to try to what's what's your pathway? There's so many pathways today, right? There's you can push it out yourself,

43:37

you know, and make, you know, you know, a third of a cent per stream or you can try to go the traditional route and go through an Yeah. All that.

43:47

What do you What do you Are you just exploring whatever? As of right now, I feel like a lot of people uh when it

43:55
Betting on yourself instead of waiting for help

43:55

comes to the music thing, they feel like they need to go to somebody to get the help or need to have something or

44:03

somebody someone to help them to get, you know what I'm saying, to get what they what they want. Me personally, I feel like I I I work and I do my work as if nobody's going to help me.

44:14

You know, and I feel like when you have that mindset, somebody going to come help you. You know what I'm saying? Like it's like at some point somebody going to want to be a part of it.

44:21

And if they don't if they don't I still I'm good. I'm good.

44:25

So I I I I in my mind I think of like my music as like I'm I'm going to do this thing as if I ain't going to ever have no help. Like nobody's going to help me.

44:33

I'm just all alone in this, you know, even though that might even though opportunity may come from that, but I'm I'm working as if nobody's going to come help me.

44:39

Yeah. Well, I I mean I told you this pre-show. I'm It's a weird emotion that I have in respect of what you're doing is I'm so proud of you.

44:47

I appreciate I respect you so much. I I think that you uh I know it's going to pop. I know it's it's not it's not if, it's just when. Yeah.

44:55

And I And I think that um but you have the right spirit. And I think that's a lot of thing. I mean, there's a lot of bad artists out there

45:03

that they can't sing. Uh they can'parser error: invalid timestamp format, but their spirit takes them, you know, and and the way they interact with

45:10

people. And the other thing I really think I'm really glad that you made time to do this, right? I mean, this is that's part of your

45:17

personality. Like, you know, some random dude just hit him up like you can I mean like I literally like hey

45:25

[laughter]

45:26

man and you're like and then you kind of like okay well you know this is something I can do but I mean that kind of you know that kind of um I wouldn't

45:35

say respect but it's sort of like opening your mind to different opportunities. The thing you say about genre is interesting because I try to do

45:42

that with with healthcare, right? And we talked about that a little bit as you were looking around the office.

45:47

Like I feel like your story is empowering for healthcare. It's

45:54

empowering for you know the business world. I feel like your story is not just an American Idol singing entertainment creative story.

46:03

Not at all. Not at all. Right. Like stories take us into places.

46:06

you know what you went through with your mom and that emotion and the way that you have carried that torch now. Yeah.

46:12

Right. That that does that's John that's you know gener not it's not genre specific and so um but I do have a genre specific question for less than 1%.

46:23

Okay. All right.

46:25

So I ask everybody on the show the one one question I many obviously many questions but one question that I ask for everybody. Um, and it's I've got

46:34

I think there's a lot of energy behind it and I can anticipate your answer, but I don't want to I don't want to tell you what I think.

46:41
His greatest superpower: connecting with people

46:39

So, if you had to pick a superpower, something you do better than everybody else, something that's, you know, deep in your spirit

46:49

that has allowed you to be successful in this world, what would you say your superpower is?

46:54

Um, I would say my superpower is I I just feel like this this is just obvious one

47:02

for me. [laughter] Uh, but my superpower is connecting to people. like um when I sing, I have the ability or not even

47:11

when I sing, just even just my presence and me just being around people or just talking to somebody, I have the ability to connect with that person and change

47:20

change their mood, you know, change how they feel. Um I was walking I I was um

47:27

at my new I was at the news station promoting an event. Yeah. um Wednesday um and um this lady walked up to me and she was like, "Hold what's your name?

47:39

[laughter] What's your name? You you true. You true." I'm like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm true." She was like, "Oh,

47:47

she like she like, "Girl, this American Idol right here." [laughter] And uh I was like I was like, "Hey." You know what I'm saying?

47:57

[laughter]

47:57

And she uh she was like um she was like, "Can I get a picture?" And I was like, "Yeah, you can get a picture. Come on now. Come on. Let's do it." Um we took

48:06

we took a selfie. We took a picture. And she told me she was like, "I I was just I I was literally having like a down I was having a down day." But you just made my day. Wow.

48:14

I'm like what? Like just me just taking I didn't seen I didn't sing in that moment. It's a small thing.

48:19

Like all I did was take a picture. My energy you know you know that that would be my superpower. That's I think I think you're I mean I think you're right. I mean I see it again.

48:30

You know I think social media is a very interesting thing cuz you can portray a person that you're not Yeah, for sure. You can make you can fake it till you make it funk doctor.

48:39

But I will say for you like you can absolutely see you know what that that

48:45

connection and I think music you know um you know I think music is

48:54

so powerful and the reason the industry is so huge is because you you you change you make people feel differently and that's what I try to do when I write. I

49:01

try to make people feel differently even though they kind of oh I know or this or that I try to put them in a different place. So I love that. So now we're

49:09

going to call. We're going to call. You can call whoever you want. All right.

49:13

And so we're going to call. We got to put the earphones on so we can hear them. All right.

49:17

And then usually what I say is if you uh just introduce let them know you on the on the Yeah, sure. And u got to

49:24

and then uh we can uh and then just let them know and then I'll uh I'll jump in. [laughter] Let me see.

49:33

You hear that? Yeah. Don't tell me you sleep, bro. Wake up.

49:42

[laughter] It's 10 10:30, huh? That boy sleep.

49:54

So, everybody, you at [clears throat] work, doc.

49:58

Yeah. What's up, you got you got time to step away real quick? Yeah. What's good?

50:04

So, I'm um I'm on the 1% podcast right now and um I got somebody want to ask you a question, doctor.

50:14

Hey, how you doing? My name is Moo. Hey, how's it going?

50:17

Hey, man. I we sorry to bother you at work, but you're on less than 1%. And we uh we're sitting here with True and we asked them a question and something we

50:25

like to do is ask somebody else the same question and see what they say. Is that you got a couple minutes for us?

50:32

Yeah, that's fine.

50:33

All right. So, what we want to know about Drew is what do you think that his superpower is,

50:41

man? I really got two answers, but um I'm going to keep it sweet with one.

50:48

I think he has the ability to read minds. And uh I say that meaning, you know, when he's out on the stage doing

50:55

his thing, he know how to pull the exact song out of somebody's mind or multiple people's mind and had a crowd rocking.

51:05

So his mind reading abilities and the way he's able to work a crowd honestly is his superpower.

51:14

That's that's amazing. What do you think about that, Trey?

51:17

I mean, you right [laughter] on. What the second one though? What was the second one you were going to say though? It was going to be something silly, bro. I'm not going to lie.

51:25

It's okay. Say it. I want to hear it. I swear. Let it be wrong.

51:30

[laughter]

51:31

Let it be wrong.

51:34

I feel like if you had a superpower though, it' probably be some like the Hulk type of be. [laughter]

51:44

We We can't have him turning green in here. [laughter] Good dude. Did you say Did you say Groot?

51:53

Yeah, like a Groot type of bill.

51:55

[laughter]

51:58

Okay, so we just had an hour podcast and he's saying I am Groot the whole time, man. This is crazy, man. [laughter] Get off my phone.

52:04

Hey, appreciate you, brother. Appreciate you.

52:06

Hey, no problem, man. Y'all take care, man. Thank All right. All right, Brody.

52:10

[laughter]

52:14

I like that. That boy a fool.

52:16

[laughter]

52:17

We when we when we release this, we going to have uh we have true all green.

52:22

Man, that's going to [laughter] be so funny. Oh man, that was great. That was great. But yeah, I think uh you know, it's funny how people perceive, you know, what we

52:30

think is great about ourselves and what we perceive about ourselves, I think is is uh is amazing. So, so you you um so you're working on this album.

52:41

Mhm.

52:42

5 to 10 years, like you know, look out whatever time you want to look out and say this is this is where I'm going to be.

52:43
Closing thoughts: Never limit yourself

52:43

Oh, man. 5 to 10 years, man.

52:54

I plan on having my life pretty much structured. Yeah.

52:59

In a sense. Um married kids, Grammys, awards, all of those things. um pretty much um chart number one album, number

53:08

one song, you know, things of that nature.

53:10

I mean, I feel like that's everybody, every artist dream, but most importantly for me, having kids and being married, um

53:18

and making sure my family, we all living and we financially stable and if I do

53:26

pass or whenever I do go, my family got something to to to hold on to long after I'm gone. That that that's

53:33

that's what I that's what I that's where I see myself 5 to 10 years from now for sure.

53:37

That's that's that's you got it all you got it all like you've thought about this before. So yeah, I think about it like every day.

53:42

This this this my dream, man. I think about it every day. When I go to sleep, I wake [laughter] up on my birthday on Jesus birthday.

53:50

Yeah. I think about it every day, doctor.

53:53

Yeah. I've This is a weird story when you think about falling asleep. So So in high school, you know, everybody wanted

54:00

to dunk. Everybody wanted to dunk, right? But that's the thing like everybody and I'm little so you know for me to dunk I had a good vertical so it was great

54:08

but I used to always dream like I used to always dream like you know I go to bed sleeping like okay this is I'm you know this point in the game and um but

54:17

it's funny how your mind plays tricks on you because then one day in the playoffs man I jumped when Frra jumped

54:25

and I went to the rim and I I was like wait a second I'm I'm right here.

54:32

[laughter]

54:33

You know what I mean? And it was funny because I surprised everybody. I surprised myself. But so that visualization, I tell you, it it it does

54:41

something to your to your body and to your mind.

54:43

So if you had one thing to say to everybody out there, you know, um you know, if you if you if you uh people are looking to say, man, TR's on less than

54:52

1%. And uh you know, what's one thing that you would want to let them know?

54:57

[clears throat]

54:57

um you know whether they're going through something like you went through or whether they're trying to achieve something like you want to achieve or that you've already achieved. What would you tell them?

55:05

Well, first off, this going to be a little little silly. Don't drink a whole bottle of water cuz [laughter] I got to use the bathroom so bad.

55:14

We got we got No, no, no. But the the truth is is you drank two bottles.

55:19

Two Oh my What is wrong with me? What is wrong with me, dude? [laughter] Yeah. I got to go to battle so bad. But

55:28

so I'm going to make it quick,

55:30

[laughter]

55:31

man. Um but truthfully, like [laughter]

55:39

[laughter]

55:42

but truthfully.

55:45

That's a first. That's a first,

55:47

[laughter]

55:48

man. But u I'm trying to get serious. Okay. All right. Let's go.

55:52

Get serious. Um, Lord Jesus, help me. Uh, but one of the things I really want to say is, um,

56:00

don't ever let nobody tell you what you can and can't do. Don't ever limit yourself to what you believe you can

56:08

achieve. Always just keep pushing and keep pushing. Always know that somebody else h has it worse than you. Yeah.

56:14

No matter what you you might think, oh, I'm I'm my situation so bad. Somebody had it worse, you know. Um, so just keep keep believing in yourself.

56:24

Even when you take take the time to be down a little bit, like when bad things happen, definitely let it let it consume you a little bit. Let it, you know, let

56:31

your emotion flow in it, but don't stay there. Like just give yourself like a day and move on and forget about it and keep pushing.

56:39

Um, but most importantly, just continue to believe in yourself and do everything from here. Don't don't don't do don't do things because you seen somebody else do

56:47

it. M don't do something because you know somebody else told you to do it. Do it from your heart, you know. And if you do it from your heart,

56:55

you'll never you'll never go wrong. You can't that's all I do. Everything I'm doing, you know, I don't I don't believe I'm the most talented. I don't believe I'm the most this. I'm the most that.

57:04

But I I do it from here. Yeah. And it it makes the difference.

57:08

Well, true. Uh listen, I have I know you got to I know you got to go, but um before you before we before we end here, I want to give you a you know, token of our appreciation.

57:19

Uh it's a signed signed book. Uh you can open it up. Oh, maybe the other way.

57:23

Other way up now.

57:26

Um you can just flip it all over. Flip it there. Here you go.

57:29

And um it's a signed book. The less than 1%. Yes, sir.

57:33

I got you a less than 1% t-shirt and some swag, but it's I signed it all for you. So, thank you so much, man. I I I truly appreciate you. So, thank you, man.

57:42

Yeah, you are less than 1%. Your whole story, that's when I first saw you.

57:46

When I first saw you, just what you've been through, right? Like, look at that video, right? I mean, you you you've been through a lot. Some of the things

57:54

that you want to tell us and some of the things that you don't, right? But you've been through that journey and in that journey, any step along that way, you can say, you know what? I'm

58:02

done. This wraps I can't do this anymore. It's not It's not worth it, man. I'm I don't This is a dream. It's I'm It's never going to happen. And how

58:10

many people along the way have doubted you? How many people along the way have, you know, made you feel like you couldn't achieve it? Yeah.

58:16

And you are achieving it. That's that's a less than 1% story. And I appreciate True the Star, my man. Look, you better

58:24

go and find him on Instagram. Where else can they find you?

58:27

Everywhere. Everywhere. True the Star. T R E W T H E S T R. Everywhere. No matter where. Everywhere you'll find me.

58:32

Yeah. So, go find him. Follow him. you know, when the album comes out, check him out. And uh you better get to him now. Yeah.

58:39

He's about to blow up. And when he blows up, you're not going to have an opportunity because he's gonna be he's going to be signing too many autographs and taking too many pictures. So, appreciate you.

58:47

Thank you. Don't drink two bottles of water, y'all. I'm going to go to go.

58:51

All right. I'll let you go before we'll do pictures, but yeah. Before he leaves the studio, me and True about to do a a duet.

58:57
Live performance of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay"

58:57

So, we No, no, no. But for real though, he's he's blessed he's blessed us with uh with doing a song. So, true.

59:10

I'm going to let you I'm going to let you handle it. Let's do it, dog. Yeah. All right.

59:15

[singing and music]

1:00:06

1:00:13

I guess nothing's [singing] going to come my way. [music] So why me is sitting on the doctor

1:00:21

watching the time just roll [singing] away. Yeah. [music] Sitting on the baby wasting time.

1:00:32

[singing]

1:00:34

It's my favorite part right here.

1:00:36

Listen. [music] Looks like nothing's going to [singing] change. Everything remains [singing] the same.

1:00:45

[music]

1:00:46

See, I can do what people tell me to [singing] do. So I guess I'm in pain

1:00:52

[music] the same rest in my bones.

1:00:59

In [singing] this loneliness won't [music] leave me alone.

1:01:04
